Professor talks
oil to Congress
Researcher presents spill
data in news conference

The solution to pollu
tion is not dilution.
So said Samantha Joye,
a department of marine
sciences professor, in a
June 8 press conference.
Joye spent several weeks
in the Gulf of Mexico inves
tigating a 15-mile-wide oil
plume she and her team
discovered near the leak
ing remains of the
Deepwater Horizon oil rig.
“The core feature is
between 1,100 and 1,300
meters, but you do get
spreading out throughout
the water column,” she
said. “It's not a constant
depth in the water that’s
laterally
flowing out
from the
well. The
plume is
very zig
zaggy."

conference summarizing
her research to-date and
answering questions about
the breadth of the spill's
effects.
“When we were out
there, we did as many casts
as we could to character
ize [the plume’s] features,”
she said, adding it would
take close to six weeks to
truly tease apart the
plume’s features.
Joye’s team spent two
weeks in the Gulf and
gathered 91 data sets
about oxygen concentra
tion, three of which she
had on display at the con
ference. She said the far-

“I think we did a good
job constraining the mini
mum size, but I don’t know
that we constrained maxi
mum size of the feature,”
she said.
She said the plume is
moving at a rate of 10 cen
timeters per second, and
research is still being done
on how to best handle the
amount of oil and gas in
the Gulf.
"In my opinion there is
really no good way to reme
diate the deep water,” Joye
said. “The oil's not in a
form that’s easily
removed.”
The deep-water oil,
which has been treated
with a soap-like disper
sant, is broken down into
small particles that are
hard to see, even in sam
ples. She said the samples
her team took had to sit
for a while before the oil
settled out. However, she
added, she does think the
dispersants are doing what
they are supposed to do,
and are effective.
Unfortunately, Joye
said, samples of the three
dispersants have yet to be
obtained for research pur
poses.
One major aspect of the
oil spill Joye was able to
study, however, was the
amount of methane, a
greenhouse gas, found in
the plume.
According to her data,
concentrations of methane
are increasing in the water
column closer to the spill
site and reduced farther
out, she said.
The plume’s methane
concentration is between

Budding gardeners at the University finally have a

“We just started being able to have [garden work

Carlson and junior Jenny Brickman are co-presi

UGArden’s garden manager. Originally, the group
looked at several different sites to build the garden
and finally chose a location on South Milledge Avenue
near the horticulture greenhouses, he said. Because
the property is owned by the University, the organiza

“It was the perfect place,” Douglass said, citing the
closeness of resources such as water and bathroom
facilities as reasons for choosing the spot.
The group plans to have workdays every Wednesday,
