work or In class. However,
this doesn't stop down
town establishments from
broadcasting the morning
games.
“I’m really impressed by
Athens,” Lynda Rucker, of
the soccer blog “a pretty
move,” said. “They’re real
ly going out of their way to
show the World Cup.”
Each venue offers its
own combination of drink
specials, breakfast menus
and, of course, fans.
“It depends on what
team you’re rooting for,”
Le said. “Globe is the place
to be for Germany.
Obviously, if Mexico is your
team, Agua Linda is the
place to be; English fans,
the Royal Peasant.”
For those who are just
kicking around the idea of
watching the Cup,

low-key option. The sec

of the Sailing Club, but the number that
shows up week-to-week varies.
The club is split in two different divi
sions daysailing and racing.
Daysailing is for those interested in
learning how to sail in a fun, non-compet
itive environment.
Daysailing takes place every Sunday in
the fall at 1 p.m.
As for those looking at getting into the
sport more seriously, the racing division
is there to cater to their needs.
The racing team participates in com
petitions called “regattas,” and the club
signs up for as many of the races as it
can.
There is a limit of eight people allowed
to participate in each regatta, split into
an ‘A’ and a - B' team.
Each team consists of three crew mem
bers and one skipper.
And like other sports at the University,
there is one school Shaw considers the
club’s biggest rival Georgia Tech.
“Georgia Tech has a really good team,
so it’s always fun to compete against
them,” Shaw said.
On a trip the team took to Tampa,
Fla., Shaw recalled visiting with his sail
ing counterparts at Eckerd College, and
said he came away impressed with both

schools that get really into it.”
Shaw said he feels that there are a few
misconceptions people bring with them
the first time they go out sailing with the
club.
“I don’t think people realize how ftm it
can be,” he said. “And also, how approach
able it is if you’re with someone that is
knowledgeable.
“On the one hand, it’s really easy to
get into, but on the other, technique is
involved and you can constantly develop
your skills over a lifetime of sailing and
still get better. Things like reading the
wind or balancing your weight on the
boat.”
Shaw said it does not take much con
vincing to get people out to sail.
“Usually I don’t have to give too much
of a pitch,” he said. “I just mention ’sail
ing,’ and everyone gets really excited
about it.”
However, Shaw said he can also make
a case for joining the club if a situation
presents itself.
“If I had to argue for it, I’d say they
would love it because you're out on the
water, which is always fun, and you’re sur
rounded by beautiful nature,” he said.
“And it’s just exhilarating when the
wind fills up the sails, and you’re the one
powering the boat and steering it
around.”
