Officials explain Florida ticket miscalculation
By KATIE VALENTINE
The Red & Black
Human error caused the recall
of hundreds of student Florida
tickets, according to the
University’s Athletic Association.
Associate Athletic Director
Claude Felton said a miscalcula
tion in determining which stu
dents met the criteria for Florida
tickets was made Friday. The
mistake was discovered after an
initial e-mail was sent to stu
dents awarding them a Florida

Five are out. Two
remain.
Rodney Bennett, vice
president for student
affairs, planned to hire a
dean of students by June.
But he said none of the five
original candidates was the
right fit for the University.
“You know it when you
see it,” Bennett said. He
could choose between two
new finalists as soon as the
end of September, said
interim Dean of Students
Laura Dean.
Acting as the primary
advocate for students, the
dean of students will super
vise many student-related
departments, such as
Greek Life, the Office of
Judicial Programs, the
Department of
Intercultural Affairs and
the Tate Center.
Student Government
Association President Josh
Delaney served on the
screening committee that
produced the two finalists.
He said there was no
clear front-runner from the
previous five candidates.
After attending the late
spring student forums with
the candidates, Delaney
said some didn’t share his
philosophy of excelling in
student advocacy. Those
who did had little experi
ence with it.
“We would have been
OK with one of the candi
dates,” he said. “But we
deserve better than OK.”
Delaney said the dean of
students should be willing
to work overtime, coming
to campus organization
meetings and making time

Crime doesn’t worry residents
By JACOB DEMMITT
The Red & Buck
First in the series.
Editors Note: Last year, The Red &
Black began compiling crime data to
create an online crime map. For this
series which will be featured every
Tuesday for the next 10 weeks we
took that crime data and found the 10
most crime-ridden streets in Athens
Clarke-County. With Jan. 1 as our start
ing date, we tallied the crimes on the
streets of the University’s home county
to create our list. Though crime is
always happening, and the list may
change over time, we begin the series
with Florida Avenue.
If its name hasn’t already made it
the most hated street in town,
maybe its 17 reported crimes will.
Florida Avenue is situated on cam
pus between Hull Street and West
Broad Street.
Not only does it run through an
Athens Housing Authority neighbor
hood, but the street is also the site of
the Hull Street Parking Deck, where
873 people leave their cars every night.
It can also be seen from many dorm
room windows in Creswell, Russell,
Brumby and the dorms in the Hill
Community.
Since January, Florida Avenue has
hosted nine theft related cases, five
batteries, one assault with a deadly
weapon, one aggravated stalking and
one drug possession.
However, it has seen even more vio
lent crimes in years past.
A man was shot in the neck while
walking on the street in June of 2009.
According to the Athens-Clarke County
Police report, a male “jumped out of

the demand for tickets this foot

“There was less demand for
the game this year than last

of requests for the game.”
Brendan Ross, a Junior from
St. Simons, said he thinks he
met the 54 hour requirement,
but won’t question the athletic
association on why his ticket was
revoked.

A 19-year-old University student
also fell victim to Florida Avenue last
October when she and a friend were
held at gunpoint and forced to surren
der their wallets, cash and a cell phone,
according to a University Police report.
Though this is the kind of street
most students like to avoid, because of
construction associated with the new
Special Collections Library, that is no
longer an option for many.

Approximately 4,000 students
were awarded Florida tickets this
year, Felton said. This number is
about the same as last year’s
number, and does not include
the 900 students who had their
tickets recalled.
Felton said an e-mail would be
sent out today to the students
affected by the recall, which
would make an apology on behalf
of the Athletic Association and
explain the mistake. All students
who parks in the Hull Street Parking

Florida Avenue.
Lindsey Richardson, an advertising

the deck, told The Red & Black she
has to be cautious when going to her
