AJ NOT PLAYING?
Top receiver may miss Saturday’s opener
By NICK PARKER
The Red and Black
Aaron Murray's official unveil
ing to Bulldog Nation Saturday
could come without his favorite
weapon: A.J. Green.
Green’s status for Saturday’s
opener is still in question after
the NCAA came to town in July
to investigate his possible atten
dance at a party thrown by an
agent in South Beach.
Head coach Mark Richt, when
asked if he expected Green to
play, was still non-committal
Wednesday.
“You know I can't talk about
that. It’s a good try though.”
Richt said. “I just can’t talk. I
don’t know the answer to any
thing, other than I’m not sup
posed to talk about the situa
tion. And I really don't know.”
Obviously, Richt doesn’t want
to risk playing a potentially ineli
gible player, so if Georgia does
not hear back from the NCAA in

▲ University volleyball player Valentina Gonzalez came to the University after graduating from a Mexican acade
my. Gonzalez, whose mother also played, says American competitiveness in sports pushes her to succeed.
Eamily, youth lead to success
By JAMIE MCDONOUGH | The Red & Black
When Valentina Gonzalez picked up
her first volleyball more than 14
years ago, she had no idea that
she would some day earn an NCAA schol
arship —and to a college in an entirely
new country.
Bom and raised in Monterrey, Mexico,
Gonzalez was inspired from a very young
age by both her parents and grandparents
to become a volleyball player.
“I started playing volleyball because it
ran in my family," Gonzalez said. “My par
ents, grandparents, aunts and uncles all
played, and I took after them."
Gonzalez graduated from Prepa Tec in
Mexico, where she played on the school’s
volleyball team and started all four years.
While in high school, she played in many
prestigious events such as the Mexican
National Olympics and the NORCECA
Championships in the Dominican
Republic.

time for Saturday’s game, does
Green still play?
According to Claude Felton,
associate athletic director of
Georgia Sports Communication,
the answer is still unknown.
“Great question, and I really
don't know the answer,” Felton
•said in an e-mail. “I'm sure there
are a lot of schools thinking
about that right now. I think all
the schools are hoping that they
hear back from the NCAA prior
to Saturday."
When Felton references “all
the schools,” he’s referring to
Alabama, South Carolina and
North Carolina, who also have
had a player's attendance at the
infamous Miami party put under
question. Two of the players in
question South Carolina's
Weslye Saunders and North
Carolina’s Marvin Austin have
since been “suspended indefi
nitely” by their teams and are
out for their season openers due
to “conduct detrimental to the
home,” Gonzalez said. “I receive all kinds
of e-mails and messages from all over
Mexico supporting me. It’s a great feeling
to be a role model to volleyball players
who hope to pursue a future in the sport."
Georgia head coach Joel McCartney
highlighted the importance of Gonzalez’s
family in her achievements.
“I think more than her ethnic back
ground, the greatest influence in her suc
cess as a player is the example Vale’s
mother set before her at a very young age,”
he said. “She has her mother’s genes ath
letically and emotionally, and I’m pretty
sure if they went head-to-head across the
net it would still be a battle.”
Gonzalez came to Georgia in 2007 eager
to overcome any challenges associated
with being an athlete from a foreign coun
try.
“It was hard at first because of the

team,” although their coaches
say is not a result of the agent
probe.
The NCAA has still yet to rule
in all four impending cases.
And with the Louisiana-
Lafayette game just three days
away, Felton said the athletic
department still has “not been
given a timeline” by the NCAA.
The uncertainty of Green’s
availability is made even worse
by the fact that Georgia will be
operating without their No. 2
receiver Tavarres King, who is
serving a mandatory one-game
suspension for an alcohol-relat- ,
ed arrest.

Three warrants were

to documents obtained by
the Red & Black.
Raymichael Williams is
accused of entering the room
of an ECV resident to use the
resident’s personal computer
without her knowledge,
according to the documents.
The documents state
Williams committed comput

influenced a witness.
According to the docu

the resident’s apartment
without permission on June
22.
He used the resident’s per

On July 9, Williams
alledgedly attempted to stop
the resident from contacting
police by telling the resident
he had already contacted
police about the incident.
Athens-Clarke County
issued warrants for Williams’
arrest Monday.
According to a University
Housing employee, Williams
is no longer employed at ECV,
although his name is still list

As of Wednesday after
noon, the voicemail of the
East Campus Community
Office still gives callers
Williams’ name.
The resident could not be
reached for comment.
