rape
Police search
for suspect
By MIMI ENSLEY
The Red & Black
An 18-year-old University
student reported she was
raped at an unknown loca
tion after getting into a
taxi downtown early
Sunday, according to
Athens-Clarke County
police.
The woman said she was
driven around for about
two hours, according to
police, and she repeatedly
told the driver her address
and that she wanted to go
home. At some point, the
driver stopped at an
unknown location and
raped the woman, accord
ing to police.
The accused rapist is
described as an Hispanic
male in his 20s with a
scruffy beard and a thick
accent, about 5 feet 8 inch
es tall and 180 pounds,
ACC Police Capt. Clarence
Holeman said.
The incident occurred
between midnight and 2:55
a.m. The police made con
tact with the woman early
Sunday at the comer of
Baxter Street and Milledge
Avenue, Holeman said.
Holeman said alcohol
was involved in the inci
dent.
Similar cases of rape
have happened in the past.
In September of 2009, a
University student report
ed being kidnapped and
assaulted.
The 20-year-old student
reported she was abducted
by an Hispanic male driv
ing an SUV on Milledge
Avenue and taken to
Jackson County, according
to the ACC police report.
The report states the
student was found wearing
only a blanket and her
underwear.
In 2008, a woman told
police she was sexually
assaulted by a man driving
a white van after he asked
her if she needed a ride.
In two separate inci
dents in September 2007,
two women reported being
abducted in a white van in
downtown Athens after
being offered a ride.

Georgia quick to focus on
first SEC game despite win
By RACHEL G. BOWERS
The Red & Black
Saturday marked a day of
firsts.
Aaron Murray made his first
start as a Bulldog, threw for his
first touchdown and first intercep
tion and had his first rushing
touchdown.
Hutson Mason also threw his
first touchdown on his first play in
a Georgia helmet to Logan Gray
for Gray’s first receiving touch
down.
Kris Durham played his first
home game in more than two
years.
The defense unveiled its new
3-4 scheme to the country for the

HIGHLAND PARK DRIVE
‘Quiet’ street still houses crime
By JACOB DEMMITT
The Red & Black
With colorful houses, nicely
manicured lawns and empty
streets, Highland Park Drive may
remind you of your grandmother’s
neighborhood. But never would
you guess it has been the site of 20
reported crimes since January.
When describing the area, most
residents use the same adjective:
quiet.
However, with seven burglaries,
seven thefts, three assaults and
three batteries this year alone, it

following Saturday’s win. “We’re
not gonna think, ‘OK, OK, this is a

improving to do.”

appears there may be more lurking
below the surface.
The street, located off Cedar

of rental properties with both stu

Despite the high crime rates,
resident Al Byrnes, a mathematics

Highland Park as “totally safe.”
“We’re far enough away from

little enclave over here,” he said.

Green in doubt with NCAA
When the NCAA came
to Athens in July to
investigate whether
or not star wide receiver A. J.
Green had attended an
agent’s party in Miami,
Green said he had never
been to Miami and had a
time-stamped picture of
him at home in South
Carolina at the time of the
party.
Case closed, right?
Apparently not, as Green
sat out Saturday’s season
opener against Louisiana-
Lafayette, with the NCAA
yet to return a ruling on the
matter. And until they do,
Mark Richt is continuing his
no-comment stance on the
issue, as Georgia fans start
to panic at the thought of
being without Green for an
important clash with SEC
East rival South Carolina.
“I’m just going to do

Editor’s Note: Last year, The Red &
Black began compiling crime data
to create an online crime map. For
this series, featured on Tuesdays,
we took that crime data and found
the 10 most crime-ridden streets in
Athens Clarke-County. With Jan. 1
as our starting date, we tallied the
crimes. Though crime is always
happening, and the list may change
over time, we continue with

Richt continued that
stance in his weekly Sunday
teleconference with the

had nothing new to add to
the situation.
“Same answer right now,”
Richt said.
So what is the NCAA’s
hold up?
