Horrible, pathetic and

the words University stu

describe a University pub

that airs during football
games.
The commercial, which
shows a boring class lec

veterinarians, researchers
and football fans, has
gained criticism recently
online. “Change UGA’s
Commercial,” a Facebook
fan page dedicated to gain

has gained more than 850
fans since its creation on
Sept. 11 this year. The com

cussed negatively on the
forums of sports website
Scout.com.
Josh Delaney, Student
Government Association
president and one of the
students featured in the
commercial, said he had
not heard positive feed
back of the commercial.
“I get a lot of text mes
sages from people who
have seen me in it that say
‘Sorry you were in an ‘insert
negative adjective here’
commercial,’” he said. “But
I haven’t heard a positive
thing about it yet.”
University officials say
the PSA was meant to con
vey the positive effect of
education on University
students.
Steve Bell, director of
broadcast, video and pho
tography at University
public affairs, said he felt
the PSA would be effective

Some professors try to keep
social media out of the class
room, but others are embracing
its potential for discussion.
Richard Menke, a professor in
the English department, said he
tweets in “microblog” fashion on
his personal Twitter account.
“In a way that a real blog can
offer commentary on things that
are on the Web already, sort of a
microblog can draw attention to
them with brief quips and obser
vations,” he said. “Actually, I
think that's one of the most use
ful things about Twitter, is get
ting a sense of conversation
about things online especially.”
Elizabeth Davis, also an
English professor, said when she
opened a Twitter account in
June of 2009 she initially intend
ed to tweet in the same way she
updated her status on
Facebook.
“Then I realized I don’t really
want to be doing that. I’ll use
Facebook more for personal stuff
and Twitter can be for my work,
for classroom use, for sharing
links related to the works and
research and teaching that I do,”
she said.
Davis is one of the few profes
sors who has successfully imple
mented Twitter in her class
instruction Menke and John
Soloski, a University journalism
professor, found that it wasn’t as
effective of a discussion tool in
large lecture classes.
Soloski set up a Twitter
account separate from his per
sonal one to facilitate discussion
in large Introduction to

“The reason I did it is because
in a class that large, there could
be students who are really reluc

so this would be a way that

"Anytime we play where we know it’s
going to be loud we try to minimize
the amount of checking at the line,
because the more you do, the more
chances you have of somebody miss

you just need to get out of or there
are certain times you need to get
your protection right. If you don’t,
you are in trouble, so well do it, but
we do try to minimize it in those
kind of games.”
