Campus workers pay for politics Money totals in thousands By BRIANA GERDEMAN The Red & Black At the University, groups such as Young Democrats and College Republicans help students get involved in poli tics. But arguably, money is more important to candi dates than support, and University employees have contributed more than $22,000 to political candi dates and organizations in the 2010 election cycle. “Money is the mother’s milk of politics, especially if you’re running in a statewide contest,” said Charles Bullock, a professor of politi cal science. “How do you even begin to introduce yourself to nine and a half million Georgians?” Candidates for political office need money for TV air time, polling, yard signs and employees to work for them, Bullock said. Candidates for state positions need more money than candidates for local office, because they have to make themselves known to a larger constitu ency. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, 46 self-reported University employees made a total of 78 political donations during the 2010 election cycle, which includes the 2009 and 2010 calendar years. After check ing with the University’s Human Resources depart ment, it was discovered 12 of those 46 donors do not actu ally work at the University, and the data was adjusted accordingly. It’s that place behind The 40 Watt, in the parking lot with the Bank of America ATM, adjacent to/ behind Agora. It doesn’t have a “front door,” just an iron black gate opening onto a patio that might’ve just been an alley in some alternate universe. It’s The Caledonia Lounge, and it is a true hidden gem News 2 Opinions 4 Stereotypes. Judgments. Negativity. The children of Pauidoe Street are aware outsiders may perceive their public housing neighborhood in a poor light. “They know. They are judged by that at school,” said Cherene Williams, direc tor of the Jack R. Wells Boys & Girls Club, which sits on Pauidoe Street. “If there’s a problem, it’s all the kids from [Pauidoe].
