WES BLANKENSHIP Ta Red a Blace
▲ Pauidoe resident Calhoun Smith said poverty
might contribute to the amount of crime.
Pauidoe is part of Athens Housing Authority.
STREET: Teens cited
as part of problem
► From Page 1
it will be able to serve a
broader array of kids.
“When we move, people
will actually send their
kids,” Williams said. “It’s
hard to convince people to
send their kids if they don’t
ever come. They’ll sign
them up. but they won't
ever come. It’s like, ‘Well I
didn’t realize where it
was.'”
Pauldoe's image prob
lems began about 10 years
ago, according to Athens
Housing Authority officials,
local police and residents.
“From my understand
ing, a long time ago,
Pauldoe used to be a bad
area,” said resident Leslie
Kenney. “But the people
that was bad over here no
longer live here. They have
been put out by the hous
ing authority and stuff like
that and by the police.
They've been barred. That
reputation still stands like
that, but it’s no longer like
that.”
But that reputation may
lure crime into the neigh
borhood. Outsiders may
think of the street as an
easy target because of the
stereotype.
“The stereotype of a
public housing neighbor
hood is some place that
perhaps doesn’t really care
about what happens in the
neighborhood,” said Athens
Housing Authority
Executive Director Richard
Parker. “There’s a stereo
type of who lives in the
neighborhood and the lack
of care in that neighbor
hood. And criminals in gen
eral seek the path of least
resistance.”
Since the beginning of
the year, Pauldoe Street
has been home to 25
crimes, including an aggra
vated assault with a deadly
weapon and a drug posses
sion incident.
Williams said people
coming into the neighbor
hood, not the residents
themselves, commit most
of the crimes reported
“Every time somebody
sees a police report because
it says it’s the Jack R. Wells,
or Pauldoe because most
of the time it says Pauldoe
when it says that, every
body’s like, Oh, that’s
because it’s all the hood
rats out there,’" Williams
said. “It’s not even the peo
ple who live here. It's some
body coming in here to
antagonize”
On Aug. 23, police
responded to a group fight
ing on Pauldoe Street,
according to Athens-Clarke
County Police records.
Kevin Lamar Browner, a
teenage resident of
Firewood Street, was
Involved and told police he
had come to Pauldoe just
to “hang out.”
A witness said the fight
was In response to an ear
lier incident at Clarke
Central High School.
Kenney said most of the
problems she’s seen on the
street have been the result
of teenagers coming into
the neighborhood.
“Kids do stuff like that.
You don’t hear about adults
over here fighting," she
said. “You don’t hear noth
ing about somebody got
shot or stabbed. Nothing
like that go on over here."
For resident Calhoun
Smith, it’s a matter of find
ing something productive
to occupy the teenagers’
time. He said disruptive
incidents are more prone
to occur when school lets
out for the day.
“They need some activi
ties to do, man,” Smith
said. “[University students]
should show them how
important school is. They
don’t know how important
school is.”
And for several resi
dents. the number of
crimes just doesn’t gel with
what they see on a day-to
day basis.
In their eyes, Pauldoe is
a community. It's a home.
It’s their street.
That's what former-resi
dent Danny Davenport
remembers —a sense of
pride, ownership and fami
ly-
“lt was Pauldoe, and we
really took pride in that
name,” Davenport said.
“People thought that it was
something special. People
didn't look at it in a nega
tive manner.”
In 1967, Davenport
then a child moved into
Jack R. Wells.
He went on to graduate
from the Terry College of
Business and is now work
ing as the property manag
er for the neighborhood.
He’s back on his home turf,
but it’s not the same.
“People are finding it
harder to find jobs,”
Davenport said. “Back in
the ’7os, Clarke County had
one of the top education
systems. Now, we’re not
achieving that same level
of success. Jobs are not
here. Many of the plants
and industries have closed
and moved on elsewhere,
so the economy is a little
tougher.”
As he walks the streets,
he’s struck by the poverty
that surrounds him. He
said seeing the residents'
struggles first hand can be
difficult.
“Sometimes you’re in a
comfort zone in your own
world and you don’t really
know how hard life can be
for people sometimes,”
Davenport said. “And you
take for granted your Job
and other things. When you
see people who may not be
as fortunate, it is tough to
digest.”
Smith said this level of
poverty leads to crime.
“It’s like when they’re In
need, they’ll just take it,”
he said.
But he said crime hap
pens everywhere, and any
negative stereotypes of the
neighborhood simply aren’t
true.
And Kenney offered a
similar sentiment
Pauldoe Is a community,
not a crime-ridden street.
It's a place where she
can sit on the porch with
her daughter and epjoy the
fall sunshine.
It’s a place where her
grandson can play In the
yard for hours.
It’s a place that’s strug
gling, but it’s home.
“It’s just like a big family
community; people look
out for one another," she
said. “Because we don’t
want that stereotype of
Pauldoe being a bad place
that can’t nobody walk
through.”
