Reporters face challenges online
By MARY WALKER
The Red & Black
Truth, technology and transparen
c; f. For students entering the joumal
is m field, these are a few of the issues
tl ley will face.
"The web removed all barriers of
' e itry into the publishing industry,”
si dd Paul Steiger, editor in chief, pros
it lent, CEO and founder of ProPublica,
a nonprofit newsroom that focuses on
ii ivestigative reporting.
Wednesday evening, Steiger spoke
a t the 32nd Annual McOill Lecture on
"Making Journalism Work in the
Digital Age.”
The McGill Lecture was estab
lished in 1978 to honor Ralph McOill,
the editor of The Atlanta Constitution
during the 1950 sand 19605. He is
remembered for his fight against seg
regation laws.
Steiger was chosen as this year’s
McGill lecturer because he “exempli
fies journalistic leadership and cour
age,” said Cully Clark, dean of the
Grady College of Journalism and Mass
Communication.
Steiger who has been a part of
the journalism industry for more than
40 years spent 26 years as a report
er and editor for The Wall Street
Journal prior to his work at
ProPublica.

Of something darker success
has come in waves.
“We started playing about 11
years ago. We’ve put out four
albums now,” Fluitt said. “We’ve
pretty much, for the most part,
been doing it ourselves. Just
finally decided to get a publicist
arid all that. We just travel
around, play music and have a
good time. It’s kind of nice not
having a record label, because we
can just make whatever type of
music we want. We’re not really
restricted by people telling us
what to do or anything like that.”
Longtime fans of the
Cowboys have sat shotgun to
the hot-blooded evolution of the
band’s sound, which has slowly
crept more into the realm of
indie rock and further away from
‘ its Texas-country roots.
“It’s just like anything that
changes over time,” Fluitt said.
“When we first started playing
we were definitely playing a lot
more country-type stuff, and as
time went on, all the songs kind
of changed. Our live show pretty
much became a lot more rock.

He highlighted several issues fac
ing the journalism field.
One issue being that “there is a
blurred line between fact and opin
ion,” Steiger said.
He quoted Daniel Patrick
Moynihan, a fonner Senator of New
York who said, “Everyone is entitled
to their own opinions, not their own
facts.”
Steiger commented on the popula
tion’s increased access to news. But
he noted the problem the public has
with filtering Information.
Twitter, blogs and many other
modes of communication have
become available for the general pub
lic. These websites allow anyone to
post anything, which poses a chal
lenge to journalists.
“The ability to collect facts is not
as accessible as the ability to share
facts,” Steiger said.
He also discussed the balance
between newspapers’ need for an
audience and obligation to tell the
truth.
With modem technology it is easy
to measure the number of people a
newspaper’s advertisements reach.
“Many items are told solely to get
clicks,” Steiger said.
Steiger read through a list of atten
tion-grabbing headlines including one
from ABC News called “Lady Gaga

upbeat and energetic, and we
wanted to transfer that onto a
CD, so we kind of went that
route with it."
Older favorites have also been
reworked to reflect the band’s
new direction, if just for the sake
of sanity.
“When you’re playing the
same song 500 times, you just
have to change,” Fluitt said.
“Even some older songs that we
play live, we try to change up
completely. It doesn’t even
sound like the same songs, so it
doesn’t get stale.”
The first notable difference
that stands cut when listening to
the Cowboys is the sense of hon
esty in the music to lump the
band into a genre such as rock,
country or indie would be to kill
the very spark that separates it
from the rest of the pack.
In “One Gentle Inch to Nine
Violent Miles,” the lead track
from “Light Fighter,” Fluitt’s
voice flirts between high and
low, as a soft crescendo of drums
and keyboard builds on steel
guitar and driving bass.

Vagina Monologue.”
“I have nothing against Lady
Gaga,” he Joked. “I have attended a
concert and would attend another.”
Steiger talked about the business
challenges for newspapers. He com
mented oh how bosses have been cut
ting back for five years.
“Cost-cutting raises ethical issues,”
Steiger said. These Issues include
behaving humanely and telling the
truth to workers.
The final point he discussed was a
journalist’s obligation to be transpar
ent to its audience.
At the end of the address, Steiger
told students going into the industry
to take comfort in the fact that these
issues are not entirely new.
Twelve of these future journalists
were selected to be McGill Fellows.
Faculty selected the Fellows based on
their academic excellence, experience
and leadership.
They participated in the McGill
Symposium, where leading journalists
discussed the meaning of journalistic
courage.
Steiger encouraged students and
helped them understand the chal
lenges they will face in the journalism
world.
“A challenge is how we can still get
good news out that is of good quality,”
said Elissa Ewald, a McGill Fellow.

“We’re from west Texas, and if
you’ve ever been out there it’s
super flat, has beautiful sun
sets,” Fluitt said. “We try to con
vey that sense of openness and
everything into our songs and
really, you know, it’s like I try to
be with the lyrics —very genu
ine and honest about it. There’s
so many bands that just write
lyrics that are catchy."
For Fluitt, the entire writing
process is as up-front and truth
ful as the words that come from
his mouth.
“With me, if I’m going to sing
it... then I want it to be some
thing that I really believe and
what I really felt,” Fluitt said. “If
I write a song or something, I’U
write it on acoustic guitar then
bring it to the band, have some
sort of idea of what I want it to
sound like. But usually what
turns out is this stuff completely
different than what I originally
thought —but way better.”

Local band influenced
by avant-garde artist
By ZACK TAYLOR
The Red & Black
Manray is a band of brothers,
literally.
Ryan, Jordan and Derek
Olivers, along with guitarist
Gene Woolfolk, make up the
group.
Though the band is less than
six months old, the brothers
have been playing music
together for more than 12 years.
“I learned to play music to
impress a girl,” Jordan said.
“She didn’t give me a chance, so
I just kept playing.”
Eventually, Derek realized he
did not desire to be a solo act.
“On my 13th birthday I got a
drum set so Derek could play
along with me,” Jordan said.
“Shortly after that Ryan traded
in some gear to get a bass rig
and that’s it.”
The brothers admit that
because of their close past,
things can sometimes get heat
ed.
“It has come to blows a few
times,” Jordan said. “Band
rooms get heated real quickly,
especially when you know you
can say ‘fUck you!’ to someone
and still be friends the next day.”
Just like the three brothers,
the band's name has a rich past.
“Man Ray was an avant
garde artist,” Derek said. “We
had found some of his films that
were really crazy-cool.”
In fact, the idea for “Manray”
didn’t start as a band at all.
“The whole thing started
with the idea that we were

his films and make sort of a
concept piece,” Ryan said.
The band, however, found
personal inspiration in the
name of the famous artist.
“The moniker ‘Manray’ was a
really good fit for us, with him
being a Dada artist and us try
ing to do this avant-garde
music,” Ryan said.
The original project ended up
having some major problems.
“We could never get a hold of
any good quality versions of his
films, so we kept rolling with
the name and writing our own
stuff,” Ryan said.
The name fit better than
they had originally thought.
“[Man Ray] took a twisted
approach to a standard art
form, which is what I feel we do
with our music,” Jordan said.
“It’s about having different per
spective.”
If forced to label themselves,
the members of Manray do have
an answer, though they don’t
feel the label fully describes
their sound.
“We’re a ‘math rock’ band,”
Ryan said. “It’s called [that]
strictly because of the time sig
natures, but personally I think
we are a lot more song-based
than many math rock bands.”
The band said that many
math rock bands that have sim
ilar musical influences as they
do are mostly instrumental.
“They don’t put a lot of care
into lyrics or the song,” Ryan
said. “They are more about
structures and don’t have the
melodic part that we like to
focus on.”
