BARN: Plantation offers creepy thrills

livestock lived upstairs.
Naturally, rumors circulated of
missing prisoners and other terrors
Inflicted by Smith.
"When we were renovating it we
still found whipping posts and
shackles, and it was just the weird
est thing, seeing this stuff,” said
April Campbell, business and facili
ties manager of Tucker Plantation.
“Even in the basement of the
haunted bam there are still shack
les.”
Campbell, a self-proclaimed
skeptic, reports strange happenings
around the property, especially
since the manipulation of the bam.
It took the team three months to
turn the one-story bam that held
horse stables into a two-story
haunted house.
“After a while, we knew we had
something special,” said Jewett
Tucker, owner of the plantation.

Nearly 100 students have spent the
last month putting on a show.
But not just any show they’ve
been organizing a benefit concert for
Nugi’s Space, a local resource center
for musicians.
And not just one concert: the stu
dents of the University’s music busi
ness program have put together five
of them, with the first two taking
place in the beginning of October.
Tasked with the project by David
Bartoe, the program’s director, as
recently as Sept. 14, the students
have only been working on the “Null’s
Space Jam” for six weeks.
Has the time-crunch been daunting?
Not exactly.
“I think when you have a bunch of
young, energetic minds who are eager
to learn about the music business,
[then] give us a challenge and we’ll go
at it and hopefully do really well with
it,” said Brian Huff, who is spearhead
ing the set-up of the series’ first show,
headlined by Yo Soybean.
Barbe, who sits on the board of
directors for Nugi’s Space, first
brought the idea to his students in
the MBUS 4100 fundamentals of
the music business class as a way
to benefit the community and provide
much needed real-life interaction.
For Jake Lanier, a senior marketing
major, the dual appeal was too much
to resist, although he felt an initial
moment’s hesitation.
“My first thought was kind of dis
belief that they were trusting us so
much in letting us put it together,” he
said.
Then he realized the task was
entirely theirs for the doing.
“It’s pretty cool because it’s com
pletely done by student groups,” he
said. “It’s completely done from the
ground up.”
The chance to partner with Null’s
Space was the deciding factor.
In fact, according to Lanier, the
center, which focuses particularly on
the mental and emotional well-being

Seymour, who has visited haunt

Southeast, boasts of the tour’s
length.
“Most [haunted houses] you’re
really in and out,” he said. “This
one takes 15 to 20 minutes with a
guide.”
There are four exits available for
those who get too spooked.
Smoke billows from vents in the
old brick bam as visitors wait in
line for admittance.
Once inside, terrors await to play
upon any and all of guests’ fears.
Particularly scary was the feeling
of being crushed between a wall of
spikes, a chilling meat locker com
plete with dead bodies and a grue
some butcher scene.

just the haunted bam.
There is a hayrlde, several fire

of artists, may be one of the only of its
kind in the state, if not the country.
“It’s a really cool mission,” he said.
Now the students have been work
ing to organize every aspect of their
concert series, from booking to adver
tising —as well as planning for who
will help with the down-and-dirtier
work of rigging lights and carrying
stuff in come show night.
Accomplishing the range of tasks
required in pulling the event together
has been never less than fulfilling,
however.
“I’ve enjoyed getting the experienc
es I wanted,” said Hope Selevan, a
senior and team leader for the second
concert in the series.
An added bonus was participating
in the larger act of working-out each
problem.
“The music business program is
such a melting pot, such a mix of tal
ents that it’s pretty cool to see all the
ideas people have,” Lanier said.
Those ideas have produced a show
case for an eclectic range of perform
ers and sounds:
The first show featured the upbeat
hooks of Yo Soybean; the second, the
industrial electro-strobe of The
Orkids; the third, which is tonight, the
work of Barbe’s own band, the Quick
Hooks.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for
someone to come out and check out
some up-and-coming bands for a
great cause,” Huff said.
It’s a variety created under the aus
pices of both local industry “Null’s

several businesses, including
Peach Mac —and local talent.
Going forward, the music business
program plans on doing another big
project next semester.
As for the inaugural concert series,
they're only aiming for good things.
“We’d love for it to be something
that’s successful and has enough of an
impact that this is something the
music business program keeps doing
every year,” Huff said, “and [that it]
keeps growing, kind of like Nugi’s

“We get beautiful, clear nights

Different than Halloween staples
such as Netherworld off Jimmy

Tucker Plantation adds to its
appeal.
The property is located about 20
minutes outside Athens in
Smithonia well worth the short

“I’ve never seen a better place

said. “It’s a real old-school haunted

that many people are doing that
anymore.”

Variety Editor's Take
Georgia
There isn’t a lot I can say
about my loss to Dillard this
week.
For the first time in the
history of our brutal weekly
battles, the game didn’t hinge
on turnovers and faulty calls.
There weren’t any epic
larger-than-life touchdown
throws that defied physics.
Dillard didn’t throw a tem
per-tantrum and whine about
getting stuck with the inferior
team and Murray didn’t hold
on to the ball when I tried to
avoid a sack thus causing me
a loss.
In fact, other than an
instance where I decided to
go for it on fourth down,
Dillard actually kept his com
posure fairy well.
Perhaps I brushed over the
fourth-down conversion too
quickly. You see, one of the
rules Dillard and I adhere to
is that we must make the
same calls that real-life
coaches would call
In my defense, I knew that
punting the ball while losing
would only lead to my immi
nent defeat.
Would Richt have gone for
it on fourth down in the first
half? Probably not.
However, would Richt have
let the other team score 100
points because of a hissy fit?
(Cue last week’s column.)
It’s not easy coming back
on Dillard. He’s a feisty fellow
with a firm grasp on the art of
stringing together four-letter
words. So for this week, I
admit defeat.
Good game, Zach.

Ladies and gentlemen,
thank you all for gathering
here for Fourth & Forever

On behalf of Mr. Dillard,
who regrets to Inform you all
he will not be in our pres
ence due to prior commit
ments and “an utterly feeble
attempt at writing a Fink
paper,” we here at Champion
Incorporated gladly accept
this week's victory with great
honor. Mr. Dillard wanted to
express his humble senti
ments with just a short, four
word statement: “In your
face, Joe.”
As you all know, there has
been no replacement for the
talent of our fearless leader.
As Mr. Williams, our friendly,
blundering fool of a competi
tor, can attest, it is difficult
to contend with greatness.
Granted, none of these
statements was released
from Mr. Dillard, but our
organization feeis it is neces
sary to no longer disguise
blatant lies behind self-effac
ing declarations.
The truth is the truth.
There is a reason our
sports editor’s record states
5-3 despite playing with the
inferior team six out of the
eight games. There is a rea
son Joseph Williams is actu
ally disliked by even those
closest to him even his
own mother was rooting Mr.
Dillard to victory this week.
That reason? Talent.
Raw, nasty, naked,
unadulterated and unbridled
talent.
“In your face, Joe.”
