Quirky duo take absurdity to a whole new level
By ADAM CARLSON
The Red & Black
Ask the members of Bobby
Joe Ebola & the Children
MacNuggits a serious question
and you re almost guaranteed to
get a silly answer.
_ * ere originally an ill-con
ceived form of mating plumage,"
said guitarist Dan Abbott of the
group’s formation. “[Singer]
Corbett [Redford] liked a girl
and asked if his then-nonexis
tent band could play her birth
day party. She called his bluff,
but we wrote some songs and
pulled it together somehow.”
The joking runs deep.
Ask about the band history
and the last thing they’ll say is it
formed in 1995 from the com
bined efforts of Abbott and
Redford.
Ask why they vanished for
most of the last decade, howev
er, and the answer is surprisingly
frank... sort of.
“We broke up just before
Bush could turn political satire
into breaking news,” Abbott
said. “But someone disturbed
our resting place and now we’re
looking for the amulets that will

years before, and grew up
just down the road from
here in Gainesville.
He'd played in bands in
college The Northern
Lights and Ashtray, among
others —and knew the
owners of the Theatre at
that time, Kyle Pilgrim and
Duck Anderson, from play
ing shows there.
“I ran into one of the
owners out front of the
Theatre, and he asked
what I was doin’, all that
kinda stuff,” Greene said.
“We caught up and I said,
‘You know man, you should
sell me the Georgia
Theatre, you're too old to
be doin’ this,’ and he said,
’OK, let’s talk shop.’”
The idea had come up in
the past, and Greene, now
with some cash saved up
and a huge desire to come
back to the Classic City,
decided it was time to
make his move.
He went into their office
that October and signed
the papers.
“It was their baby, and
they didn’t wanna sell it to
just anybody,” Greene said.
That meant maintaining
the tradition of the club in
both its style and atmo
sphere.
“I didn’t wanna change
anything, just put some
love back into it,” he said.
What Greene loved and
still loves about the
Theatre is the distinction it
maintains through its
indistinctness.
It’s not a rock club or a
jam club or even a hip-hop
club. Outside it's a beauti
ful building and inside it
can be whatever Greene
and concert-goers want it

allow us to rest.”
Reforming in 2009 meant
returning again to performing
live, which also meant reviving
the band’s particular brand of
backroom, raunchy pop-punk
rock.
Songs include the homemade
desolation of “You Don’t Have to
Die Alone,” and the sunny cha
cha absurdity of “Skin Cancer.”
If it sounds like the sounds of
Bobby Joe Ebola aren’t readily
classifiable, well, they aren’t.
“We’ve tried fitting In,”
Abbott said. “It didn’t take.”
Often, the lyrics are built
around jokes and spastically
overblown wordplay.
Where they come from,
though, remains a mystery hid
den behind a smirk.
“Drugs come first. Then vio
lence,” Abbott said of the writ
ing process. “Then the music
starts from somewhere and sing
ing birds alight on our fingertips.
to be.
In its lifetime, the
Georgia Theatre has show
cased a variety of the best
acts within practically
every genre of popular
music: Dave Matthews
Band, R.E.M., Method Man
and Red Man, Beck, The
Goo Goo Dolls, Bubba
Sparxxx, David Allen Coe,
The Butthole Surfers, P
FUnk and The Wu-Tang
Clan.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s
jam or country or blues or
indie, it doesn't matter,
that makes no difference to
us,” Greene said. “What
makes a difference to us is
that people will want to
come see the shows.”
Today, the Theatre is
completely gutted. The
music of construction
resounds from inside occa
sionally, and the famous
marquee is bereft of show
dates.
“It’s a lot like a death of
a family member,” Greene
said of that fateful day over
a year ago. “It’s such a
weird feeling when you just
walk up and see your baby
burning... What do you do?”
What he did was break
down.
Greene had just finished
renovating the building in
May of 2009, a month
before the fire, five years
after buying it.
Now his business was
broke, with insurance only
covering his costs to the
bank, and he had no way to
re-start any sort of revenue
stream.
But then a plan
emerged. Benefits were
held, blueprints were
drawn up and action was
taken.

The music that goes along
can be equally playfully bizarre,
but not all of the band’s point
and counterpoint structure is
intentional.
Occasionally, the music and
words simply end up at odds.
“Sometimes it is a conscious
choice, other times we hum a
melody and put words to it,”
Redford said.
Weirdness aside, Bobby Joe
Ebola is catchy, in its curio-shop
way.
Instead of letting the music
draw in a live crowd, the band
has devised another strategy for
gamering a fan base for live
shows it just might be a tad
illegal.
“Hostages help,” Redford
said. “Usually, we only have to
warn them not to leave. The
danger in leaving always has to
be worse than the show. Plus,
we’ve tried bribery with those of
our fan base in public office but
we want to avoid conflicts of
interest in the future.”
The next few months will see
the band continue to tour, with
an EP to follow next year.
