BY THE NUMBERS
For a difference of five wins, the expectation would be for two teams
to be on opposite ends of the competitive spectrum. While Georgia
is stumbling through one of the worst seasons in recent memory, the
Tigers are well on their way to the national title game. Still, the num
bers tell a story of two teams more similar than it would appear:

THE KEY MATCHUPS:
Bulldogs vs. Tigers
Nick Fairley vs. Ben Jones/Cordy Glenn
Defensive tackle Nick Fairley has been labeled as dis
ruptive by every offensive line he has gone up against.
The 6-foot-5, 298 pounder is second in the
conference with 7.5 sacks, but the junior
also has tallied 18 tackles for loss good
for first in the conference l5 quarter
back hurries and one interception. Georgia
center Ben Jones and left guard Cordy
Glenn will have their hands full with Fairley
all game long, as he will demand a double
team like he has all season. Though it is
not likfely they will be able to completely
shut down Fairley, the two will have to at least contain
him to give Aaron Murray time in the pocket.
Cameron Newton vs. Georgia’s defense
If Georgia contains Auburn's star quarterback, the
Bulldogs will give themselves a shot at an upset. If
Newton takes over the game, there will be
little hope for Georgia to get a win. The
Heisman Trophy Candidate has the size of a
defensive end and can run over defenders
to finish plays and get extra yards. The
Bulldogs will have to gang tackle Newton to
limit those yards after contact and cannot
take a play off or Newton will capitalize. As
in Fairley’s case, the Georgia defense will
likely not be able to make Newton a com-
plete nonfactor, but containing him will be a must if the
Bulldogs want to come out of Saturday at 6-5.
Georgia’s wideouts vs. Auburn’s secondary
If Georgia is able to hold off Nick Fairley and cut down
the amount of pressure he is able to get on Aaron Murray,
the Bulldogs’ wideouts may be able to
exploit the suspect Tiger secondary, which
has given up 241.3 yards per game this
season. A.J. Green, Kris Durham and
Tavarres King will need to run good routes
and have monster games for the Bulldogs
to move the ball in third-and-long situations.
If Murray can stay on his feet and gain back
the accuracy he had through the first eight
games, the Bulldogs can take advantage of
Auburn’s secondary for big gains.
