A wrap-up of the week’s ups and downs
Harry Potter Sevan: Part One
It’s hard to believe, but the first Harry
Potter book came out in 1998 on this
side of the pond. And 12 years later,
the saga is finally coming to an end
... sorta... with the release of “Harry J
Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Part 1.” Since we were eight, most
University students have grown out of
dressing up as witches and wizards.
While Harry, Ron and Hermione face
adult problems in the final install
ment, the movie can help us celebrate
our childhoods.
Student Government Association
The “Israeli resolution” was a point
less proposal. Thankfully, SGA
dropped it. The resolution reached
beyond SGA’s powers and had the
potential to alienate students. The Qg
editorial board hopes this means
more useful plans for the University
lie ahead.
Last three minutes
In the last three minutes of Georgia’s
matchup against Auburn, the Tigers
had two players get ejected and Nick
Fairley laid a cheap shot on quarter
back Aaron Murray. Not only was it a
late hit, but the defensive end led with
his helmet when he made the hit and
it seemed as though he had malicious
intent. We hope Mark Richt filed a f
complaint with the SEC office and the
hammer gets brought down on Fairley
for a hit that would have warranted a
hefty fine had it happened in a NFL
game.
Christmas Creep
The Christmas spirit is infectious at
its best, but overbearing at its worst.
And its worst comes when people tfßflk
start putting up Christmas decora
tions the day after Halloween. Why
not begin celebrating the Christmas "
spirit the moment Santa Claus arrives
to conclude the Macy’s Thanksgiving
Day Parade?
Airport Scans
Have fun showing off your assets for
airport security this week. It’s called
Advanced Imaging Technology —and
its X-ray photo can see under your
clothes when you step through air
port scanners. The editorial board SSBA
understands security is necessary.
But this crosses the line. Who knows
what employee might take that photo 9
home? Who knows which photo might
end up on the Internet? We have a
right to privacy, and a post-9/11 world
doesn’t change that.
Thanksgiving break assignments
Ah, Thanksgiving break! The joys of
turkey, sweet potatoes and pumpkin
pie ... plundered and pillaged by the _
avalanche of homework assigned on
our week off. The editorial board says
good luck to fellow students laboring
over 20-page papers and biology proj
ects this week. So much for a break.
At least we get food?
Basketball wins
Expectations were high for the
Georgia men’s basketball team head
ing into the season, and it is living
up to those expectations so far. The
team is 2-0 for the first time since the J
2007-08 season. And even better the
team picked up those victories with
out star forward and SEC Preseason
Player of the Year Trey Thompkins.
Who knows? Maybe those expecta
tions won’t be far off.
Robbie Ottley, Courtney Holbrook,
Dallas Duncan, Rachel Bowers and
Ryan Black for the editorial board
Quote of the week: “I think the resolution
serves as a blanket statement imposing one
opinion for the entire University... We believe
it’s hindering free speech at the University of
Georgia.”
—from Nate Christensen, president of Athens
for Justice in Palestine, in u SOA may pass
resolution in support of Israel,” Nov. 16

Love and marriage need no timeline
Tick-tock. Your love life is on a
timeline.
Not when you’ll get mar
ried, but how long it takes for a
relationship to be worthy of mar
riage or deemed “loving.”
In a recent debate on The Red
St Black’s balcony, a question was
proposed whether how long
you’ve been dating directly corre
lates with how prepared you are for
marriage.
The female side of the picnic
table agreed that time does not
factor in how much you love some
one, but rather the quality of time
and general compatibility with a
person is more of an indicator.
The guys, however; emphasized
the time aspect, saying if a rela
tionship is in the early stages
less than a year considering mar
riage, no matter the quantity of
love felt, is a rushed decision.
The (male) consensus agreed
that a year of dating is the appro
priate amount of time before pon
dering the world of diamonds and
platinum.
Although the topic originally
spawned from the discussion of
marriage, not love —as Frank
Sinatra sings, “You can’t have one
without the other.”
While I agree that you should
know someone before hitting the
altar, I don’t believe that comes
with a standard length of time
some people are more efficient at
communicating.
Students must demand
fair politics in all areas
I applaud the student body for
voicing its criticism of the Student
Government Association’s inappro
priate proposed resolution.
I commend SGA for listening to
its constituents.
If only this same uproar and
motivation could be stirred for the
Israeli-Palestinian issue on a
national level.
The same polarization that we
just narrowly avoided on our cam
pus is unfortunately prevalent in
our society.
The United States’ blind politi
cal support and yearly donation of
$3 billion to Israel, a state that
commits numerous human rights
violations, cannot be tolerated.
What about all the U.S. citizens of
Palestinian and Arab descent that
are being alienated by our govern
ment?
I challenge the student body to
rise again to fight yet another,

When you boil down compatibili
ty based on time, you open up the
door to devaluing love and reduc
ing the devotion to simply hours
and days.
Let’s say you have a partner
you’ve been with for two years, but
for the past 18 months he or she
has been studying abroad at
Oxford - would you consider that
a real-ationshlp?
My problem isn’t just with the
ludicrousness of attempting to
define love on the basis of time
but the attempt at validating love
in the first place.
Everyone does it.
Someone says they love some
one and your follow-up question is
“How long have you been togeth
er?”
Although ironic, your past plays
a big part in present compatibility
and when the love bug will bite
you.
When you have a lot of experi
ence dating different types of peo
ple, you have better knowledge of
what characteristics work for you
and which don’t.
And with every break-up, you
learn a little about yourself —and
possibly realize, for the first time,

Bartenders under 21
know what’s what
As I sit in class reading The Red
& Black, I flip to Katie Lazzara’s
article (“Never trust bartenders
under 21 years old,” Nov. 18). I had
several issues with her entry.
By saying “How can I trust a
sober bartender?" she is Implying
she wants her bartender to be
drunk.
Even though bartenders work in
a drinking environment they
shouldn’t be drinking heavily on
the Job.
Do you want them to add an
extra zero to your tab and over
charge your credit card, or be

you’re not that perfect either.
After this harsh realization, it’s
easier to avoid the judgey-wudgey
approach and leam to love your
partner’s Imperfections.
I’ve noticed some friends who
reach their third or fourth year of
dating and start planning a wed
ding even when their connection
is self-proclaimed dysfunctional.
“But I’ve been with them forev
er, I have to love them enough for
marriage.”
When people start defining love
chronologically, it’s easy for anyone
to assume they truly encompass
the emotion based on how long
they’ve been with a person.
Love is a feeling, which swarms
your head and warms your heart.
It’s not some prize you receive
like a “5 yrs with us” wristwatch
from a retail job there’s no
amount of time that can definitive
ly return love.
On the converse, there’s not a
minimum amount of time you must
reach before you can say you love
someone and truly mean it.
However, there is a minimum
amount of time you must reach
before society validates your love
to be real, and it seems that
amount of time at least with the
men at The Red it Black is one
year.
Samantha Shelton is a
senior from Auburn
majoring in newspapers
drunk as they make their journey
home at 3 or 4 a.m.?
Then she moves, saying 18- to
20-year-olds shouldn’t bartend
because they “have never tried
their own cocktail.”
Does Lazzara honestly believe
that 18-to 20-year-old bartenders
do not know the difference between
“rum and vodka?" The majority of
downtown Athens is comprised of
underage students.
Furthermore, Katie proceeds to
represent the main point (finally)
that she believes the drinking age
should be lowered.
Was dissing underage bartenders
an attempt to back her final point
up?
Oh and Katie, I’m 19.
A mimosa is champagne and
orange juice and a Bloody Mary’s
alcohol is vodka with primarily
tomato Juice among other ingredi
ents
I didn’t have to look it up.
