listen up! The Smashing Pumpkins - Teargarden by Kaieidyscope In the spirit of adapting to the changing musical landscape of the digital age, BUly Corgan the vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter behind Chicago-based alterna tive rock band The Smashing Pumpkins announced after the release of 2007’s album “Zeitgeist” that typical studio recordings were no longer in the big picture for the band. True to his word, “Teargarden by Kaieidyscope,” The Smashing Pumpkins’ new est musical escapade, redefines the recording process by bringing fans along for the ride. Advertised as a “new kind of album, an album you can hear as it’s being made,” “Teargarden” has circumvented the main stream the entire project will be comprised of 44 tracks, released one at a time, through the band’s website. Eight songs have been released since September 2009. Each time a set of four songs is released, a physical EP counterpart volume is put out for sale. Once all 44 tracks have been released on 11 EPs, the entire album will be released as a box set with additional bonus material. Despite the unique marketing scheme, there have been drawbacks to the process so far. For one, long time drummer and co-founder Jimmy Chamberlain quit the band in 2009. Newcomer Mike Byrne has proven himself a highly capable drummer and has filled the void as best he can, but nobody can replace Chamberlain’s signature bombast. Sure, Corgan in essence is The Smashing Pumpkins, but without Chamberlain pummel ing the kit alongside layers of guitar and nasal ly vocals, something in the sound is missing. “Vol. 2: The Solstice Bare,” released Nov. 23, bears many of the same problems that plagued “Vol. 1: Songs for a Sailor.” For an album whose approach to marketing and release is left-of-center, the same can’t be said of the music itself. So far, the majority of “Teargarden” has been smoothed-over and conventional. Most of the songs sport a prominent pop sensibility not heard since “Adore,” but unlike that album, the Pumpkins take very few risks in terms of composition and dynamics. Easily the most impressive cut on “Vol. 2” is “The Fellowship,” with a galloping rhythm and a bubbling, Muse-esque synth figure that gives the song an epic, proggy edge. The lyrics “Are you with us or against us?” are repeated a bit too much, but somehow it works, contributing some much-needed urgency to the song. The other three tracks range from passable to sub-par, featuring formulaic pop melodies and undercooked lyrics. “Tom Tom,” with its incessant “sha-la-la” vocal melody and pre dictable structure, is utterly disposable. “Freak,” with its hooky guitar melody and catchy chorus, is another obvious attempt at radio play (and a successful one at that). It’s not horrible, but all the same it’s achingly familiar. “Spangled” is a modest, attractive love song that sounds pleasant enough but drifts by without leaving much of a mark. VERDICT: “Teargarden by Kaieidyscope” is an interesting concept for our oversaturated digital age. Also, it’s cool that the fans can hear it as it’s written. I just hope for the remaining 36 tracks Corgan will choose a musical direction that more accurately reflects its inventive system of distribution. The Lady Dogs didn’t reach double digits until nearly 12 minutes were gone in the half. They looked unlikely to reach 50 points never mind 70. And for a game that so resembled a loss to USC just eight days ago, the Lady Dogs showed a lot of poise in the second half by continu ing to battle. “We didn’t come out with the intensity we needed and we didn’t look like we had any energy,” said freshman Ronika Ransford, who scored 11 points in the game. “And we wanted to come out stronger in the second half and we really wanted to take heed to what he said. I think [this win] was big because it was a learning point. We’re still trying to learn who we are as a team and Coach always wants us to get bet ter and we took the USC loss and compared it to the first half of [Wednesday] and I felt we really learned from that.” Georgia next plays Sunday night when the team takes on Georgia Tech in Atlanta, a team it has beaten 27 of the last 30 meetings.
