University student’s song can be heard 30,000 feet in the air By ADAM CARLSON The Red & Black Michael Whitworth got his most recent big break from an airline, in an e-mail. American Airlines was writing to inform him that, yes, it’d be spotlighting his “Just as Surprised as You” for three months on all of their flights. “I was like, ‘Woah, yeah, great.’ I was surprised ... but it was a bit of happy news,” Whitworth said. It also couldn’t come at a better time ~ a senior, and former staff writer for The Red & Black Whitworth has been play ing music professionally for several years. He’s had a passion for it even longer than that, beginning nearly since birth and nurtured as far back as moments spent singing in church. “It was just kind of who I was when I was growing up, and I love it,” he said. “I really can’t see myself doing anything else.” But the recent months have seen two big career shifts. The first was a transi tion into solo performing after three years touring as a member of Holiday Parade. The second was Whitworth’s first step taken into the country genre, begun with the release of his ER “God Only Knew,” in May. The switch, from bass player in a hooky pop-punk four-piece to star in a project of one, may seem like a stretch until the end result is considered Whitworth’s solo work echoes much of the lively tempo of his past collaboration. The main difference is in the range of writing possibilities. “I love the<pop-country genre because you can write about anything and its acceptable .... you can write about any thing from God to write about beer,” he said. Now he’s sharing the experience. “[People] think it’s about older women and it’s not,” said Rosenbaum, who has worked in and around media produc tion practically since birth. “It’s about interesting people.” “Sing My Troubles By” is his three-years-in-the-making documentary about the old traditions still thriving in a modem Georgia culture. The documentary is exemplified by the women’s choice to carry on in performing and cherishing traditional music like gospel, blues and country, which is so much more than a tagline, Rosenbaum said. “You get to hear music and you get to hear stories about these folks’ lives,” Rosenbaum said. Originally intended and begun as something smaller in scope, the documentary’s range and depth of subject matter was soon widened on the advice of one of its produc ers, Lance Ledbetter. “It was just gonna start off as a short piece ... but we expanded it,” Rosenbaum said. In fact, it was the pair’s working partnership Art’s in audio recording, Neil’s in media production —and their shared interest in folklore that first helped start the project. “I thought, ‘We should do a documentary together,”’ Neil Rosenbaum said. From there, the making-of began: filming, recording, edit ing, compiling creating. The originally narrow focus became more encompassing; more people were interviewed; more viewpoints were expressed. “[lt’s] kind of the gamut, y’know,” Rosenbaum said. “It’s got humor, country, blues.” The result, he said, became surprisingly emotional. “It’s a subtle kind of haunt ing, beautiful reality,” he said. With the help of his own high-powered laptop, Rosenbaum kept the produc tion values, and impact, high. “We were able to pull off, really, a high-quality image,” he said. “And it gives you a glance into these homes.” Reaching the finish, howev- 60 j Services GRAND OPENING- CELL PHONE REPAIR on Satur day UGA vs. GT 11/27/10. 165 E Clayton St. WIN A FREE Apple IPad, A Pair of Oakley or Cosa Del Mar Sunglasses or SIOO In Cell Phone Acces sories to be given away on Super Bowl Sunday. Now, he’s caught the ear of American Airlines, the result of his publisher Josh Roland having submitted his work for consideration. About 3,000 people sent their work in and 10 were picked, Roland said. “They found it and really liked it,” Whitworth said. Asa result, the airline will be playing his song from December to February on all of its business and first class flights. Most importantly, all the international traffic American Airlines receives will allow a specific group of people exposure to the music: Artist & Repertoire execu tives. “It [is] a great way to get his name back into the right ears,” Roland said. On top of that, Whitworth has also been working on new material with pro ducer Paul Reeves. And on top of that he’s also continuing toward finishing his English degree. “It’s been interesting balancing the music career and the school career,” he said. The goals going forward remain specif ically indefinite, but generally musically oriented. “I would like to be just a professional musician,” Whitworth said. To that end, he’s been in contact with radio stations in the northern part of the state, like 103.9 FM, in order to continue to build buzz and drum-up interest for his work. Having a three-minute melody piped out over speakers 30,000 feet in the air is an important step forward. Whitworth hopes he can keep them coming. “I love the song writing aspect. I love the traveling,” he said. “I love the shows. So any arena where I can play music would be wonderful.” CINE SHOWING When: Today at 5 and 7:30 p.m. with music from some of the film’s performers at 6:30 p.m. Where: Cine Price: sl2, includes film screening and music performance er, was more than actually filming the footage. “Once we had the footage, the film revealed itself,” Rosenbaum said. This involved actually con structing a narrative and point-of-view: editing and building one thing from many —and the process hasn’t been quick. “Basically it’s been a refin ing process for the last three years,” Rosenbaum said. With the film’s true release approaching, he hopes “Sing My Troubles By” finds a place —and an audience on the strength of its almost anthro pological interest. Because the songs of these women are the stories of their lives. “There’s a collected wisdom represented here,” Rosenbaum said. “We’re talking about our elders, and they’re talking about their elders.” Red&Black EARN UP TO $100!
