Mankind On Threshold
Of "Springtime Of
History” Pope Says
(Radio, N. C. W. C. New Service)
VATICAN CITY, — His Holi
ness Pope Pius XII told more
than 100,000 young Italians
packed into St. Peter’s Square
here that “all the world is re
awakening” and that mankind
is on the threshold of a new
“springtime of history.”.
The Pope spoke on the 90th
anniversary of the youth section
of Italian Catholic Action.
He said that humanity is com
ing out of a “dark winter” of
errors, dishonesty and war. Not
only this year’s spring, but also
the springtime of history is not
far off, he said, and beyond that
there lies “a brilliant summer”
for mankind.
Interrupted by cheers, the
Pope traced the passage of the
“dark winter,” which was made
dark, he said, by “errors which

SISTERS OF MERCY FLAN
EDUCATION CONFERENCE
have disturbed so many minds;
dark because of the mud which
has contaminated so many
hearts; dark because of dis
honesty. . . because of badly
oriented people and broken fam
ilies; because of devastated na
tions; because of a world torn
apart by the horrors of war.”
“But God,” he continued, “who
has permitted the dark winter
and has readied a brilliant sum
mer, obliges us all to live and
work in a climate of reawaken
ing and a time of spring.”
“All the world is reawaken
ing,” the Pontiff said. “Material
life, even in the midst of so
many sadnesses and miseries, is
moving always toward better
and more widely distributed
welfare. He who considers the
ascending curve of scientific
progress notes that it follows al
most a type of chain reaction.”
“Also in the life and activity
of the sprit,” he said, “there are
evident signs of a reawakening.
Man will be ever more free from
material labor and from servile
work. Automation is transform
ing the greater part of human
labor into intellectual activity,
while extraordinary technical
progress is making the diffusion
of culture among men always
more possible and easier.
“We also note evident signs of
a reawakening in social life,”
the Pope stated.
“For the first time,” he said,
“men are aware not only of their
increasing interdependence, but
also of their marvelous unity.
That means that humanity will
become always more ready to
feel itself a part of the Mystical
Body of Christ. Consequently,
the necessity of a Christian
solution for so many problems,
which hold the world in anguish,
will be and will appear always
more evident to the eyes of
honest men.”
“As in all springtimes, so in
the one to come there will be
winds and storms,” the Pope
continued. “The Church has not
finished her martyrdom since
She faces in these days, unarmed
but fearless as always, the furi

PHILADELPHIA ■— The Ed

Union, under the auspices of
Mother Mary Maurice Tobin,
R.S.M., Mother General of the
Religious Sisters of Mercy, will

aims of Catholic education” and
to beat her with malignant in
sinuations and injurious suspic
ions, directly throwing mud on
her immaculate vestments.”
“There is passing through the
world a voice of reaction
(against evil). Will you hear it?”
the Pope asked. “Will you make
it your own? Will you give it to
others so that it may become
the cry of Italian youth and the
world’s youth?”
“Make Our hope yours, and
tell all that we are in a spring
time of history. May God grant
that this spring will be one of
the most beautiful that man has
ever lived,” the Pope concluded.
Four cardinals, 20 other pre
lates and diplomats accredited
to the Holy See were grouped
around the throne on the steps
of St. Peter’s Basilica, from
which the Pope spoke. Mass had
been celebrated before the Pon
tiff was carried on his portable
throne through the cheering
crowd to make his speech.
“To encourage the spirit of mu
tual helpfulness and coopera
tion in promoting the education
al progress of the Sisters of
Mercy in all the provinces of the
Union.”
The 108 official delegates to
the Conference will be members
of the General Council, the
Mothers Provincial of the nine
provinces and general delegates
representing over six thousand
