Says Most “Catholic Convicts”
Did Not Go To Catholic School
CHICAGO, (NC)—Eighty per
cent of the men admitted to the
Illinois State Penitentiary who
claim to be Catholics have never
attended a parochial school.
Ninety-eight per cent of the
convicts who describe them
selves as Catholics have never
attended any high school, or
were educated in non-Catholic
institutions.
These facts were revealed by
Warden Joseph E. Ragen of the
State Penitentiary, in an address
that 20th-century communism is
simply a development of the old
Indian village commune, they
are building up a following.”
Meanwhile, the communists go
on recruiting intellectuals, Mr.
Hyde said.
For all the “grim picture”
which he admitted he had
painted, Mr. Hyde made it clear
that there are movements in
Latin America that represent
“genuine strength.” Among
these he mentioned:
1) The Catholic rural life
movement, now in its beginning
stages, which he believes will do
much to raise the Latin Ameri
can standard of living as well as
deepen its religious faith.
2) Adult education under
Church leadership. He described
the work of a priests at Bogota,
who enlisted Catholic Action
leaders to make and distribute
inexpensive radio sets capable
of receiving his broadcast in
structions in the alphabet, the
elements of religion, and tech
niques of farming.
3) The work of mission so
cieties, which he said is receiv
ing much help from such lay
organizations as the Grail, the
Young Christian Workers, and
other apostolic organizations.
to the Little Flower Council, an
organization of laymen which
helps boys who wish to become
Carmelite priests.
Warden Ragen also stated that
“less than five per cent of the
convicts who claim Catholicism
as their religion had made their
Easter duty or attended church
in the two years prior to their
conviction.
Warden Ragen added that
most convicts come from homes
in which the father has failed to
enforce proper discipline.

Worker, communist newspaper,
declared that “communism is
spreading in Latin America.”
Red gains south of the border,
he explained, may enable com
munism to “outflank” the West
in what he described as “the
worldwide battle for the minds
and hearts and souls of men.”
Mr. Hyde, one-time trainer of
British communist leaders, be
lieves that the communist ad
vance is stymied in Europe and
North America “at the present,”
though a severe economic de
pression could weaken the West.
“The real chance of com
munism’s pentrating the western
hemisphere,” he said, “lies in
Latin America, where the situa
tion is very dangerous indeed.”
Observing that “too many”
Catholics in Central and South
America are “Catholics in name
only,” Mr. Hyde declared: “The
struggle in Latin America must
lead either to communism or to
Christ. Either the people will
deepen their Catholicism, or
they will play into the hands of
the communists.”
Mr. Hyde cited as “outstand
ing problems of Latin America
today:”
1) The “extreme land hunger”
of the people, most of whom
have the status of “peasants.”
2) The “enormous proverty,
especially in rural areas,” and
consequent malnutrition.
3) Illiteracy, which is still
“widespread” in Latin America.
4) An extreme housing short
age. “For every Latin American
family to be provided with at
least a one-room dwelling,” Mr.
Hyde said, “would require 19
million more houses to be built.”
5) The “chronic shortage of
priests.” To bring the ratio up
to one priest for every 2,000
persons would require an addi
tional 40,000 priests right now,
he said.
“No wonder the communists
have seized upon this situation,”
Mr. Hyde declared. “And while
the party is illegal in most Latin
American countries, there usual
ly is a nucleus to be found, and
these members are playing their
cards better than ever before.”
As an example of improved
Red strategy, he cited the fact
that “now they are going to the
Indians in the interior, instead
of concentrating on the cities
alone. And by telling the Indians
