PARIS, — Sound civic and
social life must be based on the
“concept of marriage and family
in accord with the order estab
lished by God.”
His Holiness Pope Pius XII
included this admonition in a
message to Catholics attending
the World Family Congress here
of the International Union of
Family Organizations (UIOF.)
The message was read during
a ceremony held at the Basilica
of Sacre-Coeur here.
“Whoever wishes to build a
civil or social structure on sound
and strong foundations must
base it on the order established
by God,” said the Pontiff.
“The Church, which is custo
dian of the truths of natural law
and at the same time interpreter
of the Divine Revelation con
firming and protecting the m,
has provided definite teachings
of permanent validity in this
respect.
“The stability of families is
often compromised for many
reasons: in many instances liv
ing conditions are difficult; the
magnificent mission of married
couples — not void of sacrifice
■— is not adequately understood
by many and unfortunately the
children are the first victims of
such a state of affairs.”
The Pope called on delegates
to the congress to pray and
work so that the family may en
joy a greater chance of devel
opment and support. He con
tinued:
“May it be God’s will that
many men of good will, wishing
to serve the true interests of
the family throughout the
world, may give it support by
means of public reaction and
legislation fostering it. Where-
ever the institution of the fam
ily is still honored may it be
protected against every attempt
at disintegration. Where cir
cumstances have shaken it dan
gerously may it be re-endowed
with its rights and just func
tions. And. wherever the dif
ficulties of modern life threaten

Asked to Support
U. $. Schools
WASHINGTON, (NC) — The
American Council on'Education
said here a “massive national
effort” in support of education is
necessary if the United States is
to survive and prosper.
“The survival and well-being
of this nation depend no less
upon the strength of our edu
cational system than upon the
strength of our military estab
lishment,” it said.
The statement was released
by Arthur S. Adams, president
of the council, a federation of
140 educational associations and
more than 1,000 institutions.
Among the points included in
the statement were appeals for
preservation of “unity through
diversity, a genius of American
education,” and recognition that
“in the present emergency, Fed
eral support should be consid
ered as a supplement to action
by state and local entities, cor
porations, alumni, parents,
churches, foundations and phil
anthropic individuals.”
Father Robert J. Slavin, O.P.,
president of Providence (R. I.)
College, was a member of the
12-member Problems and Poli
cies committee of the council
which prepared the statement.
