NEWMAN: HIS LIFE AND
SPIRITUALITY, by Louis Bou-

This new study of Cardinal
Newman makes use of docu
mentary material such as dia
ries, notes, and letters, which
have never before been cited.
Unlike previous biographies
which have concentrated on ei
ther Newman’s Anglican or his
Catholic periods, Father Bou-
yer’s book covers its subject’s

life from beginning to end.'
While the author does not min
imize the significance of New
man’s intellectual influence, he
is more concerned with the de
cisive personal events of his
subject’s career.
Bouyer points out that many
earlier biographies of Newman
have depended for information
on the famed Apologia, which is
not, and does not set out to be.
an autobiography; and on the
Letters and Memoir published
by Newman’s kinswoman, Anne
Moseley, who cut, altered and
manipulated the originals with
out making the fact clear to her
readers. i
Louis Bouyer, known in the
United Slates for his university
lectures, is a professor of Spi
ritual Theology at the Institut
Catholique in Paris. He is the
author of numerous books, two
of which, “The Meaning of the
Monastic Life” and “The Spirit
and forms of Protestantism,”
have recently appeared in
American editions. Father Bou
yer, like his subject, is a convert
to Catholicism.
A MAGAZINE SAMPLER
We have received some repre
sentative copies of several Cath
olic publications: Marist Mis
sions, Queen of All Hearts, The
Christian Family, and Spiritual
Life.
(1) Marist Missions is publish
ed once every two months by
the Missionary Sisters of the
Society of Mary. This is a di
gest-sized magazine which, with
colorful backs, plentiful photo
graphs of life in Oceania, and
surprisingly good art work
turned out by Sisters them
selves, has a professionally at
tractive format. On the other
hand, most of the text is of an
informal quality and has the
same pure charm for which
nuns the world over are known.
Currently running is a serialized
history of the Marist Missionary
Sisters which, though written
by a Sister, is not informal, be
ing reportorial documentation in
excellent and absorbing style.
Subscription: $2.00 year. 363
Central St., Framingham Cen
tre, Mass.
(2) The Christian Family, a
monthly issued by the Divine
Word Missionaries, is similar to
Marist Missions in that it con
tains much description of life in
the missions. Offering consider
able historical and geographi
cal detail, it is at once entertain
ing and informative. With the
ideal of the Christian family as
a running theme, this magazine
also features articles of an edi
torial or devotional nature that
are designed to strengthen fam
ily ties either by direct or in
direct effect. A stand-out fea
ture in the February and March
issues (1953) were two articles
by Father Peter Weyland, SVD,
on sacred art. This is a topic be
ing much exercised in the ad
venturous U. S. Catholic press
these days, and some of the
products, if not staggered by
genius, are quite happily provo
cative. Subscription: $2.00 year,
c/o Divine Word Missionaries,
Techny, Illinois.
(3) Queen of All Hearts, an
other bi-monthly, is published
by the Montfort Fathers, and
features material in every in
stance slanted toward venera
tion of Mary. The variety of ap
proaches is wide, including fic
tion, poetry, documentary fea
tures, special departments for
children and shut-ins, and a
mixed bag of editorials. The art
work includes some reproduc
tions which are interesting and
of good quality. Special devotees
of Mary may find it rewarding.
Subscription: $2.00 year, c/o
Montfort Fathers, Bay Shore,
New York.
(4) Spiriiual Life is a quarter
ly published by t h e Discalced
Carmelite Fathers. A generally
high quality magazine distin
guished by the scholarship and
stimulating mentality of many
of its contributors, the level of
contents is somewhat uneven.
A trite and unfortunate poem
set beside an article by Jacques
Maritain, for example, seems an
unnecessary lowering of an al
ready asserted high tone. In ad
dition to several fine articles,
Spiritual Life features an ex
tensive book review section. The
appeal of this magazine is mark
edly more adult than that of the
three previously discussed. Sub
scription: $3.00 year. 1233 S.
