Reported Back
in Business
(N.C.W.C. News Service)
MIAMI, Fla., — Max Kram,
whose money-making religious
trinket enterprises have been in
and out of the news frequent
ly since 1955 is back in business
again under the name “Relig
ious Products of America.”
Mr. Kram, who declared him
self bankrupt in 1957, is now
offering to Catholics through
the mail a small, plastic four-
inch high ,statue of the Blessed-
Virgin Mary containing a mag
net which enables it to stick to
automobile dashboards.
“The Magnet Auto Compan
ion,” as Mr. Kram calls it, is ac
companied by a notice which
reads: “If this meets with your
approval please insert $1 and
mail in enclosed envelope.” Re
plies are adressed to P. O. Box
344 at the Biscayne Annex of
the Miami Post Office, the same
postoffice box which Mr. Kram
has used since 1956.
Mr. Kram originally began
operations under the title “Re
ligious Products of America.” In
1956 he was forced out of busi
ness by a fraud order issued by
the U. S. Post Office Depart
ment. Soon after a Federal Dis
trict Judge upheld the Post Of
fice ruling on June 12, 1956, Mr.
Kram organized the new busi

Until recently nothing has

Keeps Mr. Kram out of the
clutches of the law.
His son, Murray Kram, who
conducted an unsolicited mail
order business for crucifixes and
medals in Pittsburgh, Pa., added
one line to his printed sales
notice which said the dollar re
quested was “for the benefit of
Murray Kram.”
Local postal authorities say
that they are at a loss to find
any method of stopping the op
erations of Mi. Kram and added
that “thousands of devout Cath
olics believe they are doing
something for the Church when
they shell out a dollar for one
of these 10 or 15 cent plastic sta
tues.”
Postal authorities have re
peatedly emphasized that no
person is under obligation to ac
