Periodical
Banned In Cuba
HAVANA, (NC) — Two is
sues of a Catholic magazine
have been banned from the
mails because it denied govern
ment claims that the nation’s
armed forces are merely fight
ing “outlaws” and stated that
hostilities in certain parts of the
country amount to open civil
war.
This was stated in an editorial
condemning both government
and rebel terriorism in the July
15 issue of La Quincena, fort
nightly published here by the
Franciscan Fathers. Both this
issue and that of July 31, which
made no mention of Cuba’s in
ternal difficulties, were banned
from the mails, although copies
sold here on newsstands were
not confiscated.
The earlier issue had also
voiced regret at the dismissal of
a group of workers at the re
guest of the Labor Ministry be
cause it had been reported that
they were “affiliated with com
munism and the insurrection.”
“We cannot condemn a man to
hunger and misery,” La Quince
na declared. “Measures of this
sort are not a solution.” It said
that the Church should avoid be
ing associated with a political
anti-communism that ignores
the social injustices that foster
communism.
