MY NEIGHBOR AS MY
SELF, by Gustavo Corcau
(Longmans, Green, $4.00).
(Reviewed by Cecelia L. Hines)
How does one review a book
that won’t stand still; in which
every word is meaningful and
provocative, every phrase full of
purpose, and the brilliant indi
vidual style of the author not
mangled by inept translation?
My Neighbor as Myself is
written by Gustavo Corcau, a
Brazilian scientist almost un
known in this country. It was
published in 1957 without any
particular fanfare but, since that
time, an essay by the same
author included in World Cris
is and the Catholic (Sheed &
Ward, 1958) has attracted a
great deal of favorable atten
tion. It is quite the outstand
ing essay in this book, publish
ed on the occasion of the second
World Congress of the Lay
Apostolate in Rome, which con
tains a series of studies by well
known men and women of dif
ferent races. The Corcau essay,
“What the World Expects from
the Catholic” contains qualities
of honesty and courage, truth
and responsibility instead of the
abstract generalization which
characterizes most of the writ
ing about the problems of the
Lay Apostolate.
My Neighbor as Myself is a
unique biography. The writer,
literally buried in scientific stu
dies for many years, is shocked
(when his wife dies) by the dis
covery of the limitations ham
pering his life. After a period
of groping in the dark he finds
that love. concerns no distan'
cause but his neighbor and the
very real present. His experi
ences are convincing. The Bra
zilian setting is new. He had to
live “through difficult years to
discover he was naked” and to
realize “Christianity’s awesome
seriousness” but feels that “to
day he is unable to separate
clearly the facts that led me to
the Catholic faith.” This latter
fact is discernible in much of the
writing of distinguished con
verts, Chesterton, Williamson
and others. In a poem Chester
ton says, “I am like Lazarus, and
I live” — and leaves it there.
Corcau does mention the debt
he owes Maritain and Chester
ton — one a philosopher, the
other a humorist — and dwells
at length on both with extrava
gant praise and delightful ana
logies. These two authors came
together to his home when one
of his Catholic friends brought
him two books and insisted thai
he read them. A Franciscan
priest, a musician, who gave his
wife the last rites, is mentioned
on several occasions.
The charm of the original Por
tuguese text is kept intact by
the translator, Clotilde Wilson,
who is known as the translator
of a book by Machado de Asis,
The Herifage of Quincas Borba.
GRAIL BOOKLETS
TO BE A PRIEST, 25c — “The
Angel himself has no such dig
nity,” said St. Catherine of Si
ena of the priesthood. This mag
azine-size, 42-page booklet is
beamed at the teen-ager with a
decision to make regarding his
vocation. It is handsomely de
signed to attract youth’s eye,
and it holds his attention with
easily read, profusely illustrated
pages. Questions submitted by
eighth and ninth graders about
vocations to the priesthood are
answered. A tour of a seminary,
plus a picture-schedule of a day
in the life of a seminarian, give
brief glimpses of preparation for
the priesthood. What does a
priest do? Both the spiritual and
the physical aspects are consid
ered, in easily understood lang
uage and action pictures. This
is a book to have handy for any
teen-ager, or for parents of boys
who wonder if and when they
should permit their sons to en
ter the seminary.
OUR LADY COMES TO
AMERICA, by Raphael Grash
off, C.P., 15c. — Thosands of
Americans have made pilgrim
ages to the sacred shrines of
Lourdes and Fatima this year.
Not so many have visited the
more accessible shrine of Guad
alupe, Mexico, the place of Our
Lady’s American apparition.
The purpose of this 57-page
pamphlet is to increase devotion
to “The Mother of True God” of
Guadalupe. Father Grashoff
sketches the background and de
scribes the appearances of Our
Lady of the humble Indian,
Juan Diego. An explanation of
the miraculous picture she gave
him, and the history of the de
votion to Our Lady of Guada
lupe from 1531 to the present,
complete this interesting book
let. — Margot Atwood.
