POPE SENDS
CONDOLENCES
TO DETROIT SEE
DETROIT, (NC) — A message
was received here from His
Holiness Pope John XXIII ex
pressing “heartfelt sympathy”
with the Archdiocese of Detroit
on the death of Cardinal Ed
ward Mooney.
The fact that the cablegram
was signed by the Pope himself
rather than a Vatican official
was regarded as unusual and a
sign of the new Pontiff’s special
affection for the late Cardinal.
The message is believed to be
his first to the U. S. since be
coming Pope.
The message said:
“We hasten to express our
heartfelt sympathy with the
Archdiocese of Detroit in the
loss it has sustained by the
death of its beloved Ordinary,
the late Cardinal Mooney.
“With the assurance of our
prayers for the happy repose
of his soul, we also ask Al
mighty God to console and com
fort the clergy, Religious and
faithful of the bereaved arch
diocese, and in pledge of that
heavenly favor we impart to
them our paternal Apostolic
blessing.”
Good character is still the best
