Trashy, Obscene Literature
Seen Hindrance To Genuine
Education Among Children
(N.C.W.C. News Service)
CLEVELAND, — Trashy and
obscene literature makes edu
cation almost impossible among
children who read it, a school
nurse warned here.
“Our children are being brain
washed by this trash literature
and in the face of it true educat
tion is out of the question,” Mrs.
Margaret Rowland said in an
interview.
Mrs. Rowland is a school
nurse whose work brings her
into daily contact with young
sters 15 and under. She is also
a leader in the Cleveland Citi
zens for Decent Literature
movement.
A nurse for more than 20
. years, Mrs. Rowland became
concerned with the problem of
objectionable literature about
three years ago when she began
working with school children.
Some of their ideas on sex and
morality startled her, and she.
usually found that their distort
ed notions could be traced to
trashy magazines they had read..
Subsequently, Mrs. Rowland
alerted local school and civic
officials to the problem. A letter
she wrote to a congressional
subcommittee investigating maii
distribution of obscenity was
printed in the subcommittee’s
official report.
Rankly obscene material i s
not the initial problem among
school children, she explained.
Instead, the destruction of pro
per values begins with sordid
romance and detective maga
zines and paperback books
available at any newsstand.
Some of this literature, Mrs.
Rowland said, discusses details
of every form of lewdness, and
it stimulates an appetite for
worse material. She called it
“diabolical,” adding:
“It’s giving our children
warped information, undermin
ing their security and hurrying
them into an amoral, mixed-up
adulthood.”
Such literature warps chil
dren’s minds, Mrs.. Rowland
charged. It indoctrinates them
in all aspects of sex, except its
proper use, and teaches them
to think of illicit behavior as
normal.
“Some of these magazines are
primers in vice and unnatural
modes of life,” she stated. “A
child obsessed by such ideas
has no time for studies or the
other normal activities of
youth.”
Mrs. Rowland called it “folly”
to spend millions for schools and
juvenile institutions, while per
mitting the traffic in this litera
ture to continue.
“Our children look to us for
guidance •— and we’ve allowed
this vulgarizing, regrading traf
fic to become part of our way
of life,” she said.
Mistakes, recognized and ana
lyzed, pay the highest dividends
