VATICAN CITY, (NC)—His
Holiness Pope John XXIII took
the occasion of an audience
granted to supporters of two
newly canonized saints to praise
families which encourage vo
cations.
The Pope received Italian and
Spanish pilgrims who took part
in the canonization ceremonies
which raised St. Charles de.
Sezze and St. Joaquina de Ved-
runa de Mas to the honors of
the altar.
The Holy Father first spoke of
the saints themselves, saying
they “tell you, people of Italy
and Spain, that you must know
how to safeguai’d the precious
gift of the ancient tradition in
which lies the secret of the true
glories of your countries which
have been blessed by God.
“They speak also of the love
for the Church and for its per
ennial magisterium (teaching
authority),” Pope John continu
ed. “They remind you how very
absolute must be the loyalty
to the homely wealth of good
morals and honest teaching.
“They testify to the value,
not of earthly things — not hu
man honor, not nobility of
blood, nor wealth — but of car
rying out the will of God with
simplicity and order, knowing
Him, loving and serving Him
honestly, then enjoying Him
eternally in Heaven.”
The Pope said that the com
bined example of the two saints
“affords us the happy opportun
ity of implanting in your hearts
the esteem (felt for) the life
consecrated to God through re
ligious vows, particularly to
day, when open hearted youth
can be misled by false mirages
of illusory earthly success.
“We, therefore, affirm the su
periority of the priestly and re
ligious vocation over other
states of life — even the most
sacrificing and faithful to the
Lord.
“But We also wish to mani
fest Our paternal and encourag
ing praise for those families
who know how to appreciate
and respect in their bosom the
gift of vocation and who claim
themselves happy to give some
of their children, to the Lord if
He calls them. May these fam
ilies know that they are prepar
ing for themselves, the sweet-

During the audience, repre
sentatives of the Carmelite Sis
ters of Charity, founded by St.
Joaquina, presented the, Pope
with, 104 chalices for distribu
tion to poor churches. Each of
the chalices represents a year
since the death of St. Joaquina.

Asks Deepening
Spiritual Life
WARSAW, (NC) — His Emi
nence Stefan Cardinal Wyszym-
ski, Primate of Poland, told his
people that the time is past for
“traditional, superficial reli
giousness.”
“We must live in full truth
before Jesus Christ, in the
Catholic community, in the
family, in professional work,”
he said, “so that while bearing
a beautiful name (of Christian),
we cannot be reproached for
belying the Gospel truth by our
lives.”
Cardinal Wyszynski urged the
people of Poland to a spiritual
renewal in a pastoral letter
marking the start of the third
year of the nine-year novena
preparing for the 1,000th anni
versary of the conversion of
Poland.
Declaring that the third year
is to be a Eucharistic Year cen
tered on the life of the parish,
the Primate said:
“We need to make great
strides in the foundations of our
individual and social life, tying
our life in santifying grace with
a vigilant concern over every
life, our own or our neighbor’s,
especially over the lives of un
born infants, tiny and help
less . . .”
Cardinal Wyszynski said that
just as the Church is referred
to as the “Holy Mother,” there
is also the “holy mother parish.”
He went on to say:
“We must foster in a special
manner in our native parish that
unity whose keeping is under
the vigil of the Holy Father, the
bishop and the parish priest. It
is precisely in order to strength
en that unity that we open our
hearts and lips to repeat the
words of the Jasna Gora (site
of the national shrine of Our
Lady of Czestochowa) vows: We
pledge to watch over the gift
of grace, as a source of divine
life, in every Polish soul. We
want to stand guard over every
human life—of the soul and the
bodje We will treat the gift of
life as the greatest grace of the
Father of all life.”
Urging the people to nurture
in themselves the Eucharistic
Life, the Primate indirectly con
demned the communist-spon
sored birth control campaign.
He said:
“We will apologize to Christ,
who lives in our parish church,
for the scandalizing of children.
We will atone to the Father of
life for having wasted the gift
of life, for violating the right
of the little ones to life. We will
pray for our brethren, who so
imprudently destroy the founda
tions of Christian morality, who
forget that if today respect for
the life of the unborn dis-
