Robert Brown,
Owner
pation in the national life of
Italy too fast.
In Bergamo the Bishop was
engrosed with his diocesan af
fairs and withdrew from the
national area of Catholic social
action. There were those who
saw in his withdrawal signs of
something more significant.
There were those who said he
was out of sympathy with Pope
Pius X and the Pope’s condem
nation of the doctrine of mod
ernism.
These insinuations troubled
Radini Tedeschi greatly. And
Angelo Roncalli shared his sad
ness. Although he granted that
perhaps the Bishop worried
more than necessary about the
remarks of critics, Father Ron-
calli’s biography stresses heavi
ly his superior’s love of the
Pope and his loyalty, expressed
both public and privately, to
the Chair of Peter.
A CHAPTER ENDS
In bad health from 1910 on,
Bishop Radini Tedeschi died
in the arms, of the man who had
served him as friend and sec
retary for ten years. Dying, he
repeated the prayers whispered
by Don Angelo: “Oh Jesus cru
cified, forgive my sins, I love
You, I love You, I love You. . .”
He died on August 22, 1914,
two days after the death of
Pope Pius X. This was signifi
cant in that on the day the
Pope had consecrated him a
Bishop ten years previous, Pius
X told him that he would come
to take him with him for eterni
ty.
In the year that followed, Fa
ther Roncalli busied himself
with his duties as a seminary
professor and with his work on
the papers of St. Charles. He
also began the biography of the
Bishop who loomed so large in
his life.
Without his knowing it, a
chapter of his life was closing
for Angelo Roncalli. World War
I had begun and another stint
in the army was near at hand.

freedom, and the Church flour
ishes and makes energetic
progress.
But there is agreement that,
should the West agree to the
spurious Soviet proposal that
Berlin be made a “free city,”
ringed with Red-controlled terri
tory—or otherwise turn West
Berlin over tc the mercies of the
Red-controlled part of Germany
—then freedom would be choked
out and the Church would
swiftly be throttled as it has
been in Fast Berlin.
In West Berlin, there are 280,-
000 Catholics, 74 parishes and a
total of 145 priests. There are
96 convents for men and women,
and these latter contain 1,627
priests, Sisters and Brothers.
Catholic schools thrive and in
crease. Catholic associations are
vigorous and grow.
THIRD (RED-CONTROLLED)
EAST GERMANY AND THE
LANDS BEYOND (and this
might turn out to be the most
crucial and determining point:)
It is not only the sturdy free
dom of West Berlin gives hope
to East Berlin, but it gives hope
also to all East Germany, and
to others living nearby under
the communist yoke. There is
no doubt of this. The figure of
Germans who crossed the Iron
Curtain through West Berlin, as
an escape channel, stand at this
time near 2,000,000. In 1958, the
escapees included 200 university
professors, 2,500 college stu
dents, 3,100 teachers, 1,200 phy
sicians, dentists and veterina
rians. Throughout the Red-con
trolled surrounding area, every
one knows the route. This goes
not only for East Germany, but
also for the lands beyond where
the Reds exercise control. It
word came to them hat the
channel was closed, there would
be despair.
East Germany (Red-con
trolled), not including East Ber
lin (similarly controlled) is
known, in Western (Free) par
lance, as the “Zone.” It has
1,763,700 Catholics; something
near 1,000 parishes, missions and
other places where Mass is said,
and 1,257 priests.
The ecclesiastical administra
tion of this area is tremendously
difficult, chiefly because of dis
locations under communist rule
and calculated Red harrassment.
From near chaos at one time,
an arrangement of four “com
missariats” has been evolved,
under the chairmanship of Car
dinal Doepfner, so that there is
order to the extent this is
feasible.
FOURTH: THE THREAT TO
WEST GERMANY:
No one doubts that, should
the communists win a victory
in West Berlin from the Free
West, they would turn at once
to an attempt to swallow West
Germany itself, with the inevi
table blighting of the Church
there.
Msgr. Walter Adolph, for
decades a prominent Berlin
journalist and now press chief'
of the Berlin diocesan chancery
office, addressing our select lit
tle group of foreign Catholic
journalists here, said:
“Free West Berlin has an
enormously responsible task. It
is an island surrounded by com
munist territory. This island
gives the people living under
Red suppression, on the very
firing line of Red propaganda,
the possibility to see what free
dom really is—to reac free
newspapers and books, to escape
Red propaganda by oblaining
free information.
“It is the last gleam of light
to these people over the line,
and they would live in total
darkness as soon as West Berlin
was sovietized.”
In this regard, there should
be erased any notion that'what
we save in Berlin is merely a
whacking up of Germany, with
the capital happening to be just
inside the Soviet zone. Berlin
is almost two-thirds as far from
free West Germany as it is from
the communist-controlled lands
to the east of Germany. Thus
it is a true “island” of freedom,
deep in the Red-held area and
totally encircled by that area.
Msgr. Adolph put the whole
matter thus: “West Berlin . . .
must be a ‘permanent alarm
clock,’ telling free countries all
over Europe that they them
selves are in danger from com
munism.”
I think the picturesque figure
and warning is solemnly to be
heeded.
