See Catholic
President As
Liberty Threat
ST. PAUL, Minn., (NC) —
Election of a Catholic as Presi
dent or Vice President of the
United States “would be a seri
ous threat to the historic liberty
and freedoms” now afforded by
the Constitution, the Minnesota
Baptist convention asserted in
a resolution.
The conservative Baptist
group, representing 101 church
es in Minnesota, held its 100th
annual meeting in suburban
Medicine Lake.
“We believe,” the resolution
stated, “that a Roman Catholic,
by both the policy and declara
tion of his own church, cannot
exercise the governmental re
sponsibility of President of the
United States as outlined by our
Constitution, without and apart
from the teaching and program
of the Roman Catholic Church
which are not in accord with
and are contrary to our Consti
tution and freedoms.”
