Population Growth In Orient,
FAQ's Annual Report States
ROME, (Radio, NC) — The
Far East, the world’s most
critical area in the fight
against hunger, last year saw
an increase of food production
over the rate of population
growth.
This fact is highlighted in
the annual report of the
United Nations Food and Agri
culture Organization. The re
port, covering the fiscal year
ending' last June 30, cites the
Far East as “one of the most
encouraging areas in Agricul
tural production.”
The worldwide study issued
at FAO headquarters here
(Oct. 2) indicates a two-per
cent rise in food production
in the course of the year. This,
says the report, “is a little less
than the average for recent
years, but it slightly exceeds
the estimated annual popula
tion growth of 1.6 per cent.

view and outlook,” the report
further notes that of the 48
countries for which it pub
lishes indices o ragricultural
production, only 15 are esti
mated to have failed to keep
up with population growth.
One of these is the United
States. The report notes that
the relative lag in production
there was dues chiefly to the
American government’s at
tempts to restrain production
to check the accumulation of
surplus stocks.

Former Chief
Hits Divided
Loyalty Charges
LEBANON, Pa., (NC) —
The former chief of Army
chaplains said here he is tired
of being told by “bigots, rene
gades and Pharisees” his re
ligion requires a divided loy
alty.
Msgr. (Maj. Gen.) Patrick J.
Ryan, a veteran of 30 years in
the Army, said his consolation
is that he has never heard
“such hypocrisy, sdch bare-
face prevarications, such
make-believe patriotism from
the uniformed members of my
own profession.”
The Monsignor, now retired
from the Army and executive
vice president of the Catholic
Digest, monthly magazine,
spoke to about 1,200 persons at
a jneeting sponsored by the
Lebanon deanery unit of the
Holy Name Society of the Har
risburg diocese.
“Catholics are a loyal peo
ple,” he said. “There is nothing
in our Constitution in conflict
with our Church.”
“Our loyalty to our flag and
country is a civil allegiance of
which we are proud and from
which we admit no substra-
cation.
“There are some who say
that this is a time for patience
and forebearance on the part
of Catholics.
“But patience wears awful
ly thin and forebearance be
comes indeed a virtue as the
sniping season opens and at
tempts are made to point me
and other Catholics as religious
dupes and political idiots led
blindly through life, unable to
resist the pressures of clerical
ism—whatever that may be.”
Baptism Increase
BERLIN (NC — The Soviet
Communist party magazine has
eexpressed alarm over the re
vival of the sacrament of Bap
tism in the Soviet Union.
Kommunist, organ of the
party’s central committee,
said most of the children born
in the region around Moscow
since World War II have been
baptized. The magazine said
this is because of the influence
of grandmothers in peasant
families. Many of the parents
of the baptized children have
not been baptized, the maga
zine stated.
Describing baptism in Rus
sia as a “particularly tenacious
survival,” the Soviet organ
warned that its importance
must not be underestimated.
