Although the Catholic Church is making slow progress in Japan, missioners report that their youth work is paying off. Unlike the U. S., non-Catholic parents in Japan are anx ious to enroll their children in Catholic schools, with the result that many new Catholic schools are over-subscribed even before construction is completed. W. Atlanta, Ga. PL. 3-8312 Says Angola Missions Closed To Protect Lives LISBON—(NC) — Protestant missions in strife-torn Angola, along with Catholic missions, were closed only to protect missionaries’ lives, it has been stated here by the Portuguese General Overseas Agency. The agency, an official gov ernment body, spoke in answer to Protestant and other com plaints against the closings by Portuguese officials in the west African territory, where an up rising by African nationalists has taken thousands of lives. The agency said that “the decisions reached by authori ties in Angola to close down those Protestant missions lo cated in areas that have been subjected to attacks by the ter rorists—which decisions apply equally to Catholic missions— have their basis only in our concern for insuring public safety and protecting the lives of the missionaries who work ed and lived in those areas.” It continued: “In view of the fact that the Portuguese authorities have not, up to now, learned of any specific reasons which might provide a definite and positive assurance that the Protestant missionaries would be accord ed special and favorable treat ment by the terrorist bands, there was absolutely no basis for excluding them from the security measures that were generally adopted with regard to other organizations and per sons.” Think before you speak, and you’ll have no trouble to speak of. WhwtM A young man working at the beach for the summer wrote the following note home. “Dear Dad: Gue$$ what I need mo$t of all. That’S right. thing ever happens here. We kNOw you like the beach, beach. Write us aNOther let ter. NOw I have to say good bye. Your Dad.” That’s just one of the*prob-( lems of Summertime. Dad has to worry about what Junior is doing in his spare time at the beach, and Junior has to he concerned about financing his beer, belles, battles and bed ding at the beach. Longfellow, obviously talk ing about a different kind of Summer from our modern type, got quite lyrical about the whole business in “A Sum mer Day by the Sea.” “O Summer day by the joy ous sea! . . . O Summer day so wonderful and white ... So full of gladness and so full of pain.” He wasn’t kidding about the gladness and pain. What caused Mr. Longfellow gladness I wouldn’t dare to say. But I would dare to say what causes the gladness found in modern vacationers. Four Roses in the Fifth, of course. Or Ballantine in the Bottle, maybe. What causes the pain? That’s easy. The five M’s of Summer, of course. Mosquito- bites, Morning-afters, Masses- missed, Modesty-unveiled, and Money-burned. There’s not much we can do about the first M, except use Buggo-spray. After all, the lit tle stingers are God’s crea tures, even if we suspect that He put them on earth just to teach us that we do dwell in a vale of tears. Even on vaca tion. There’s no morality in being bitten by a mosquito, however, unless it’s the language you use when he chomps into your epidermis. So we can pass on to the next Summertime haz ard — Morning-afters. A beach-house without booze is like Judy without Punch. Even youngsters who stick to Cokes at home seem to de mand beer as soon as their toes touch the sand. It’s a shame, when you think of it, because so many folks spend their whole hard-earned vaca tion not knowing what they’re doing. And when each morn ing is a morning-after, it takes most of a miserable day to get ready for the night’s drinking bout. This leads us quite natural ly — or un-naturally, if you prefer — into the next hazard — Masses-missed. You can have time off from your job. But just as there’s no time off from marriage vows, there’s no vacation from religious du ties. The churches near the beaches, thank heaven, are quite crowded during the Summer rush. But there are very many, undoubtedly, who let their morals relax at vaca tion time. The first thing to slip is Sunday Mass. The next miserable M of Summer is Modesty-unveiled. If * a n^, a n from Mars* even landed on one of our beaches during July, he’d probably be so frightened he would forget all about seeing our leader and swish back home. Even though the skin ex perts say that too much sun will make our skin wrinkly, there will always be sun-wor shippers in our midst. This would be dandy, but some beach outfits are so skimpy that it’s a wonder there’s enough to go around. The Money-burned problem faces us all. We pay good cash to furnish meals for the mos quitoes, to suffer from sun burn and then buy lotions and potions to survive, to eat hot dogs for dinner, and to drink moonshine in the sunshine. When we return home—weary and tanned and broke—there’s hardly enough money left to buy milk for the kids at school. Not that I’m a spoilsport about these things. Everyone is entitled to his fling. Just so he doesii’t fling too far, though. Longfellow, not I, said that Summer is full of gladness and pain. There’s no reason why there should be so much pain, though. It’s meant to be glad ness and recreation and relax ation. If our vacation is not de lightful, it’s because we have chosen to let the five M’s of Summmmmer spoil a Summer time that should be blessed with God’s companionship and His smile of approval. AUSTRALIAN VIGIL FOR WORLD PEACE SYDNEY, Australia — De spite rain, blustering winds and winter cold, 1,500 pilgrims of all ages spent one whole night in prayer in the mother church of Australia, St. Mary’s Cathedral here. Organized by laymen, the vigil was attended by Norman Cardinal Gilroy, Archbishop of Sydney (June 30-July 1). The pilgrims included Australians, Chinese, Italians, Hungarians, and Indonesians. The pilgrims, some of whom traveled from the far north coast, prayed for Christian un ity, world peace, the “Church of Silence” behind the Iron and bamboo curtains, and the conversion of communists. A large crowd also attended a similar vigil in St. Francis’ church, Melbourne. Cloudt's Food Shop 1933 Peachtree St., N. E. News Service) LISIEUX, France — Devo tion to the Blessed Virgin “is the mark of a truly Catholic heart,” His Holiness Pope John XXIII said in a radio broadcast to a national con gress studying Mary’s spiritual motherhood. The Pope told the closing session of the French national Marian Congress (July 9):, “Whatever may be our state of life and our responsibilities, we are all of us enveloped by the sweet maternity of the Virgin Mary, who does for us the same things done by all mothers for their children: she loves, she watches, she pro tects, she intercedes.” Catholic Area Hardest Hit 3y India Floods (N.CW.C. News Service) NEW DELHI, India—Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru has told the nation that the worst- hit of India’s flooded areas is Kerala State, which has the largest proportion of Catholics in India. The Prime Minister appeal ed in his radio broadcast (July 5) for contributions to his flood-relief fund. The monsoon floods in Kera la are unprecedented. Rain- swolen rivers spilled over their banks and swept across the plains to the sea. A raging ocean battered down sea-walls and poured into rice paddies and other low-lying lands. Tens of thousands of fami lies lost their homes. Official figures for the predominantly Catholic Ernakulam and Al- waye districts of Kerala put the number of homeless be tween 15,000 and 20,000. Other hard-hit districts of Kerala were Trichur and Cranganur. The homeless crowded into solidly built Catholic churches in their towns, bringing along their cattle. They fled to the larger cities by the thousands and were given shelter in schools and other public build ings. Archbishop Joseph Attipetty of Veraploy visited several refugee camps in the neigh borhood of. Ernakulam to bring help. Parish social serv ice groups and St. Vincent de Paul conferences are cooperat ing with government relief ag encies.
