the best known mystics of

Richard Rolle, Walter Hilton,
Juliana of Norwich, and the
unknown author of the “Cloud

come about through the popu

as Richard Rolle. To cut across
futile intelectualizing in pray

of Privy Counsel” advises his
monks to come down to the
lowest level of their intelli

are, but that you are.”
Eric Colledge, a lecturer in

In the first, Professor Nor

showing the necessity of stu

of doing elementary historical
research. He devotes one chap

“how,” then follows with sev

Many of the Popes have di

in their search for answers to
puzzling questions. Within re

in many forms, and commen
taries have become relatively
numerous and inexpensive, so
that now even the inquiring
laymen can obtain enjoyment
and enlightenment from this
mental giant in pocket-book'

The Pocket Aquinas, edited
by Dr. Bourke, an eminent

these have been translated

THIS IS THE HOLY LAND,
by Fulton J. Sheen, Yousuf
Karsh, and H. V. Morton, Haw
thorn Books, Inc., 1961, 143
pp., maps, illus., $4.95.
Reviewed by
E. Matthews
Anyone contemplating a pil
grimage to the Holy Land will
find this companion to This Is
Rome, an excellent guidebook.
For those who must content
themselves with armchair
traveling, this book affords the
opportunity of being guided
through our Lord’s homeland
by one who has guided so
many souls to a true love of
our Lord. Bishop Sheen shows
the Holy Land, its relics and
shrines, its people and ways of
life, its pasturelands and wat
ers, to his nephews as though
he would have them relive the
lives of the people who knew
Jesus personally.
H. V. Morton has written ex
tensively of the Bible lands,
and with authority describes
the holy places and the tradi
tions that handed them down
to us. He gives us a true ap
preciation of Antonio Barluz-
zi’s work of rebuilding the
churches of the Holy Land,
architectural praises of God,
and has written a footnote on
this saintly man’s life. Travel
restrictions between Jordan
and Israel are outlined with
suffiicent warning that no one
would attempt to bypass reg
ulations.
Yousuf Karsh has achieved
another photographic v/ork of
art dramatically capturing the
feelings and moods of the pecn
pie and places associated with
the Holy Land.

eight chapters, and it will be
of benefit to enumerate them.
They are: Knowledge and
Method, Nature and Philoso
phy, Man and Psychology, Re
ality and First Philosophy,
Moral Life and Ethics, Socie
ty and Political Philosophy,
Beauty and Art, and Revela
tion and Theology. Each is pre-
ceeded by a Forward, and the
whole work begins with an
excellent General Introduction
so that in itself the layman
is offered a practical compos
ite of Aquinas in Theology.
Philosophy, and Ethics.
Whereas The Pocket Aquin
as deals with actual transla
tions of significant works of
Aquinas, My Way of Life is a
work of interpretation and
corrtrffentary on 'St. ThoMaV
Summa Tbeologica, for the
first time in pocket edition.
Readers familiar with Father
Farrell’s Companion io the
Summa, will recall the scope
and detail of that four vol-
umed work. They will want
My Way of Life as a supple
ment and as a further simpli
fication of Aquinas. In pub
lishing this pocket-book edi
tion, The Confraternity of the
Precious Blood aims to do for
the Summa what “My Sunday
Missal” has done for the Mis
sal of the Mass itself: to put
it into the hands of all men.
St. Thomas in his Prologue to
the Summa writes: “Because a
teacher of Catholic truth ought
not only to teach the learned
but also to instruct the begin
ners . . . we propose in this
book to treat of whatever be
longs to the Christian religion
in such a way as may tend to
the instruction of beginners.”
This book, therefore, is not
only for the learned, but for
beginners also.
Shortly after completing
Part I of this book, “God and
His Creatures,” Father Farrell
died. Dr. Healy took up the
completion of the undertaking
by writing Part II, “Man: The
Image of God,” and Part III,
“The? God-Man.” < ! .
Both The Pocket Aqitihas,
and My Way of Life are re
viewed here together because,
in a sense, they belong to
gether. The second is an excel
lent and invaluable companion
to the first. After actual trans
lations of parts of the Summa
are read in The Pockef Aquin
as, an excellent follow-up
reading would be the appro
priate section in which Fr.
Farrell and Dr. Healy write on
the same subject. Both are
heartily recommended for the
home library and for frequent
reading and study.
STORYBOOK SHELF
By MICHELE CARAHER
The early history of nearly
all long-settled nations has
produced some hero, some
great deed to be sung about
and commemorated down
through the ages. Hero tales
and folk stories are the simple,
unsophisticated history of a
people. Children today love
these stories for just those qua
lities, though once they were
written to pass on tribal lore
to adults.
Why should children read
the long past deeds of the
Greeks, King Arthur, Roland?
Without an opportunity to
meet great heroes and their ef
forts to tame a hostile world,
the future adult grows up
missing half the meaning and
all the color of world civiliza
tion. Part of the appeal of ep
ics and folk tales lies in the
color which abounds in them,
crimsons, purples, golden
crowns, precious jewels, bril
liant clothes and armor. He
roes and villains are easily rec
ognized, deeds of heroism
magnified and fantastic, re
wards and punishment
prompt. Naturally the young
reader is not going to confuse
that world with the,, one he
lives in, but an acquaintance
with it enriches thie imagina
tion forever.
A new book, Hero Tales
From Many Lands, offers a
very broad sampling of the
world’s colorful epics. One
may find Hector and Achilles,
Attila the Hun, King Arthur,
Beowulf, Cuchulain, Deirdre,
Roland, El Cid, Siegfried, Ice
landic, Finnish, Arabian, Per
sian, even Indian and Japa
nese heroes. The parent read
ing aloud could spend innum
erable hours dipping into the
fund of stories in this big book.
Though this, book holds an
almost endless fund of magic
carpets, it is also disappoint
ing in one respect. Some of the
episodes from the epics are
not well chosen. For example,
the selection from Deirdre
breaks off annoyingly just as
adventure starts; there are
bound to be squawks of “What
happened then?” The stories,
seletced by Alice Hazeltine (a
well known and respected chil
dren’s anthologist who died
shortly before this book was
printed) are meant to stimu
late further reading of the
complete epic, but frustration
is not necessarily a stimulant.
However, in no other collec
tion could you find such a
broad sampling, and this fault
is found only in a small num
ber of the selections. Best of
all, there is a bibliography
which tells you where to find
the complete story, and a glos
sary and index.
The illustrations by Gordon
Laite are something to see:
bold, strong and extremely
colorful. They suit the larger-
than-life qualities of these sto
ries to perfection. Hero Tales
From Many Lands sells for
$5.95 and is published by
Abingdon Press. It will not
take the place of individual
books which offer the com
plete epics of the Iliad, the
Odyssey, the Arthurian leg
ends or the Song of Roland,
but it is the next best, thing.
