Catholic leaders join ed the worldwide expression of loss at the death of Dag Hammarskjold, secretary gen eral of the United Nations. They called it a tragic blow not only for the United Na tions, but for the free world as well. “We are sure that his tory will inscribe on his grave, ‘Blessed is the Peacemaker,’ ” one said. Hammarskjold died (Sept. 18) when the airplane in which he was traveling on a Congo peace mission mysteriously crashed in a forest preserve in Northern Rhodesia, eight miles from the Ndola airport where it was scheduled to put down. Francis Cardinal Spellman said Hammarskjold’s death is “a tragic loss to the United Nations and the entire free world.” “All lovers of freedom are saddened by the untimely death of Dag Hammarskjold," said the Archbishop of New Pope Sends Condolence VATICAN CITY (Radio, NC) — His Holiness Pope John XXIII has sent to the Swedish government and the United Nations his condolences “for the painful loss” of Dag Ham marskjold, U. N. Secretary General and a Swedish citizen. York. “His courageous resolve in withstanding communist pressure made him a strong bulwark of democracy and a fearless champion of peace.” Archbishop Karl J. Alter of Cincinnati, chairman of the administrative board of the National Catholic Welfare Conference, called the death “a severe blow to the United Nations at a most critical time.” “It deprives the internation al body of a statesman of the first rank — a man marked by intelligence, patience, per severance, tact, courage and a consuming desire for peace among men. “Convinced that peace is the fruit of justice, he dedicated himself completely to the cause of justice, especially for the small, unprotected nations. We are sure that history will inscribe on his grave, ‘Blessed is the Peacemaker.’ “Our best tribute to Mr. Hammarskjold will be renew ed efforts to make the United Nations an effective instru ment for peace on earth,” said Archbishop Alter. Auxiliary Bishop James H. Griffiths of New York, who had known the UN General Secretary personally for many years, said Hammarskjold died as “a martyr for peace.” Bishop Griffiths is chairman of the U. S. He was reached for comment in Rome where he was attending sessions of the theological preparatory com mission for the ecumenical council. “The cause of peace,” he said, “has lost one of its wisest and most dedicated protagon ists. And the new young na tions, at a time when it was most important to them, have lost in him a true friend.” The Bishop said Hammar skjold held his post in the midst of the “most unimagin ably difficult” problems. “We literally saw him growing old under their burden.” “One can only hope and pray that there may be found in his successor a man of similar ded ication and courage,” he said. Charles Herzfeld, president of the Catholic Association for International Peace, said in Washington that Hammar skjold’s death is “a tragedy for all humanity.” “He was completely dedicat ed to genuine world peace and order, and he worked for it more effectively than anyone,” said the president of the 34- year-old organizationn. “He gave the ideals of a world community concrete meaning by his many efforts to strengthen the United Nations and to make it more respons ive to the world common good. “His death will make the current session of the United Nations General Assembly a most difficult one. All coun tries of good will must coope rate at this time if the United Nations is to be saved as an effective tool for world peace,” said Herzfeld. Catherine Schaefer, director of the NCWC Office for Unit ed Nations’ affairs, called his death “the loss of a courageous man of whom there are too few.” “His death is a tremendous blow to the United Nations, particularly at this time when there are so many problems facing it and when the very concept of a single secretary general is being fought so strongly by the Soviet Union and its bloc . . . “Mr. Hammarskjold fought —and earned the enmity of the Russian bloc on that ac count.— for the principle that the United Nations should have the capacity to act in the event of a danger to peace. His death is a real loss to the world in that sense, besides being the loss of a courageous man of whom there are too few.” THE BULLETIN, September 30, 1961—PAGE 3 C*tobt«tfi«d IMS s THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME' TRADE MARK R«G. 301 West Broughton Street Savannah, Georgia Celebrating 76 Years of Service To The Homemaker. 48 Stores in 31 Key Cities. (NC Pho tos) Vatican Daily Voices Sorrow At Expulsion VATICAN CITY (Radio, NC) — The Vatican City daily has called the expulsion of a bishop and 135 priests from Cuba by the Fidel Castro re gime a cause of deep sorrow for the Catholic world. L’Osservatore Romano said of the deportation of Auxiliary Bishop Eduardo Boza Masvi- dal of Havana and the priests: “The act of the Cuban gov ernment, which has followed so many other very grave demonstrations of hostility toward the Church and the Catholic religion, which is that of almost all the people of Cuba, reveals in all its disturb ing reality a situation which, while a reason of the deepest sorrow for the Catholic world, cannot leave unmoved those who still have the rights of justice and liberty at heart.” Although the Holy See and Cuba still officially maintain diplomatic relations, the Cu ban ambassador is currently absent from his post here.
