Pope, Cardinals Meet
T© Approve Miracles
Of Two Lay Brothers
VATICAN CITY (Radio,
NC) — The Sacred Congre
gation of Rifes has held a
general meeting (March 20)
in the presence of His Holi
ness Pope John XXIII to ap
prove miracles wcsrked
through the intercession of
Blessed Martin de Porres and
Blessed Francesco Maria of
Camporosso.
This general meeting was
one of the last steps before ca
nonization of the two Reli
gious. Although it was not yet
officially announced, it was
known that Blessed Martin
will be canonized on May 6.
No date was available for
Blessed Francesco’s canoniza
tion.
Both men were lay Broth
ers, Blessed Martin a 17-centu
ry Dominican and Blessed
Francesco a 19th-century Ca
puchin. Canonization will
bring the two men, one a half-
caste Peruvian and the other
an Italian, together on the
Church’s official roll of saints.
The cures effected through
the intercession of the two
Brothers have been declared
beyond the powers of nature
by the congregation’s medical
board. These miracles have
also been approved by card
inals of the congregation.
The first cure in the case of
Blessed Martin occurred in
1948, when Dorotea Caballero
of Paraguay was instantan
eously healed of an intestinal
occlusion. The second was that
of Antonio Calvlra Perez, who
suffered a foot injury in 1959
at Tenerife, in the Canary Is
lands, when a wall collapsed.
He developed gangrene of the
foot, but was healed instan
taneously.
The first of the Capuchin’s
miracles was the cure of a frac
tured jawbone and concussion
suffered by Angelo Parpagli-
one at Chiavari, Italy, on Sep
tember 4, 1929. The second was
the cure of the septic middle

each camping season are the
activities which close each
week’s session. For ten years
the camp has staged a full
fledged water ballet in the
camp pool. All the color and
drama of a full-scale Holly
wood production descend for
a day. Many swimming coach
es and instructors have com
mented on the exquisite bal
let arrangements which the
campers and staff have been
able to achieve in such a short
time.
The visit of the King of
Siam, the annual pageant, the
Indian Days, the colorful pag
eantry of initiation into the
camp honor society, and most
of all the friendly spirit of the
camp have made Villa Marie
an outstanding example of
Catholic camping at its best.
Each day of camp begins and
ends before the Blessed Sacra

only are children at Villa Ma

they can expect their spiritual
welfare to receive first place

CATHOLIC WOMAN’S CLUB
MEETING AT SAVANNAH
SAVANNAH — The month
ly meeting of the Catholic Wo
man’s Club was held on March
13th in the Club Rooms.
Rev. Berndan Dooley, O.S.B.,
Faculty Member of the Bene
dictine Military School, was
the guest speaker and gave a
very inspiring and interesting
talk on the life of St. Patrick.
He stressed the confi
dence in God held by St. Pat
rick, who said “I have cast
myself unto the bonds of Al
mighty God for he rules every
thing.” Before St. Patrick died,
he had converted practically
all of Ireland to the Catholic
Faith. He had the whole island
lined with churches and mon
astic foundations, to which
flowed a tide of conversions.
His greatest fear before he
died was stated in these words,
“I fear the loss of the labor
which I began. Let it not hap
pen to me from God, that I
should ever part from these
people which he purchased in
the ends of the earth.” His
three greatest attributes were:
(1) Faith and confidence in
God; (2) Eminen spirit of pray
er and (3) Spirit of Penance.
Mr. N. T. Stafford, Grand
Marshal of the St. Patrick’s
Day Parade, was also a guest
speaker. After expressing his
gratification and pride at hav
ing been chosen the Grand
Marshal, he presented his two
aides, Mr. William D. Me Al
pha and Joseph K. Ebberwein,
together with Mr. Dan J.
Keene, General Chairman of
the Parade Committee.
A film on Savannah, pro

MONTREAL, (NC) —- It’s as
difficult to be a good police
man as it is to be a good Chris
tian, a priest told a study dis
cussion group of 150 police
men here.
The study groups are part of
a new program introduced by
newly installed Police Director
Adrian Robert to improve the
standards and morale of the
recently reorganized Montreal
police department.
Chief Inspector Jean Paul
Gilbert, Dr. Paul Lefebvre, a
psychiatrist, and Claude La-
vergne, police reporter, also
took part in the discussions.
Police Sgt. Paul Roy said the
purpose of the study groups
was to improve the moral and
intellectual standards of police
men, to provide a useful
source of information ,to de
velop a taste for culture and
increase the interest of police
men in their careers.
Father Cox reminded the
policemen that they are sub
ject to the usual ^perfections
of men which they must seek
to overcome. He said: The pol
iceman who does not think
before he acts and who cannot
control his emotions should
never be given a revolver or
an automobile.”
