THE BULLETIN OF THE CATHOLIC LAYMEN'S ASSOCIATION OF GEORGIA
DECEMBER 16, 1933
SERMON OF MONSIGNOR
MITCHELL AT SAVANNAH
At Requiem Mass at Cath
edral for Captain Rice
(Continued from Page Seven)
it is today by a small and loyal group
of men and women of whom Captain
Rice is the most conspicuous exam
ple. If we had in Georgia one thou
sand men like Captain Rice, what
could we not accomplish for the
Church and our beloved state! Or if
we had even one hundred! The fact
is that a limited group of men and
women are making the great sacri
fices of thfcir time and talent neces
sary to insure the work of the Lay
men’s Association.
“Captain Rice has laid down the
burden to answer the summons be-
for the Eternal Throne. He has left
behind him ‘a monument more en
during than brass’ in the results of
his years of effective activity for his
beloved Laymen’s Association.
“May the Catholics of Georgia,
who admired him so, and loved him
so, demonstrate the depth and gen
uineness of our admiration and af
fection by perpetuating the work of
the Laymen’s Association, brought to
its present illustrious status by his
labors and those of his associates;
may we resolve to rear on the foun
dation laid by him and his pioneer
co-workers a mighty structure emi
nently worthy of the distinguished
cause for which they labored.
“May God comfort the sorrowing
family and friends of Captain Rice.
May his labors in this life gain for
him immediate and everlasting hap
piness in the next.
“ ‘Blessed are the dead, who die in
the Lord. From henceforth now.
saith the Spirit, that they may rest
from their labors; for their works
follow them.’ ”
