Minnesota Priest
Dies in Florida
Father Joseph P. Dohmen
Pastor at Clara City, Minn.

PALATKA, Fla. — The Rev. Jo-
sepr P. Dohmen, pastor of St. Clara
Church, Clara City, Minn., who has
been in Florida for his health, died
here January 4. Father Dohmen
was bom in Dusseldorf, Germany,
and was connected with the parishes
in Camby and Clara City, Minn., in
the Archdiocese of St. Paul for the
past eleven years.

Elmer Layden, who goes to Notre
Dame to succeed Heartly Anderson,
overwhelmed the previously unbeat
en University of Miami team. 33 to 7,
in a New Year's game at Miami.

SAVANNAH FAMILY DIES
Peter Louis Constantine Au
thority on Savannah History
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Peter Louis
Constantine, the last survivor of
eleven children of a French family
which dates back to the time of La-
fayette, died here in December at the
age of 73. He was a descendant of a
French grenadier who came wtih
other Frenchmen to settle at Vernon -
burg at the suggestion of Lafayette.
Born in Savannah February 14, 1860,
Mr. Constantine lived here^ all his
life, making his home at White Bluff,
the home of his family for genera
tions. He was one of the best in
formed men in Savannah on the
city’s history. Having served as a
justice of the peace, he was univer
sally known as Judge Constantine.
The funeral was held from Sacred
Heart Church with a Requiem Mass,
with interment in Bonaventure
Cemetery. Surviving are his sister-
in-law, Mrs. A. C Constantine; a
nephew and two nieces.

Bishop Walsh Pontificates at
the Cathedral of St. John
the Baptist There

CHARLESTON, S. C. — The cus
tomary Midnight Mass Christmas was
celebrated at the Cathedral of St.
John the Baptist, the Most Rev. Em
met M. Walsh, D. D., pontificating.
The Very Vev. John J. Hughes and
the Rev. Chris O’Sullivan were dea
cons of honor, the Rev. Francis O.
Ferri, deacon, the ReV. John P.
Clancy, sub-deacon, and the Rev.
John J. McCarthy, master of cere
monies. Midnight Masses were the
rule in the other churches in the
diocese also save those without resi
dent priests.
BISHOP BLESSES
STAINED GLASS WINDOWS
Bishop Walsh blessed two stained
glass windows at Our Lady of Mercy
Church, the Rev. A. J. Westbury,
pastor, recently. Bishop Walsh also
blessed a new staue of St. Jude in
the same ceremony.
FATHER WOLFE ADDRESSES
ROTARY CLUB LUNCHEON
The Rev. Henry F. Wolfe, pastor of
Sacred Heart Church, delivered the
address at the Christmas program
meeting of the Charleston Rotary
Club. Father Wolfe told his listen
ers that the world today was on the
verge of war and that the remedy
for the disturbed conditions today
was the wholehearted acceptance and
application of the principles of the
Prince of Peace, and not lip service
to them.

M. A. Condon, James B. Mahoney
and Albert Sottile were among the
members of the board of directors of
the chamber of commerce named at
the annual meeting early in January.
Mr. Condon, who is a past Grand
Knight and past state deputy of the
Knights of Columbus, is first vice-
president.

COMMISSION CHAIRMAN
Alderman J. Albert Von Dohlen,
mayor pro-tem of Charleston and
president of the Charleston Rotary
Club, has been named chairman of
the city swimming pool commission.
Mr. Von Dohlen has been suffering
from a severe illness, but recovered
sufficiently to be out before Christ
mas.
CHARLESTON COUNCIL
IN CHRISTMAS PROGRAM
P. N. Lynch Council, Knights of
Columbus, sponsored a Christmas
program, Grand Knight John I. Cos
grove presiding. At a recent meet
ing Professor J. Harold Easterby of
the College of Charleston, spoke on
“The Purpose of the Fathers of the
Constitution”, the first of a series of
constitutional lectures.

Travels 50,000 Miles a Year
Ministering to Sailors

ATLANTA, Ga.—Atlanta had a
noted visitor recently in the Rev.
Joseph Rockliff, superior of a band
of fifteen priests who minister to the
wants of the Catholic sailors through
the Apostleship of the Sea. Father
Rockliff’s territory is world-wide,
with headquarters in Rome; he
travels an average of 50.000 miles a
year, on the largest passenger liners
and the lowliest freighters, super
vising and assisting his associate
priests in the world’s principal ports.
He sails soon from New York for
New Zealand.
There are about 700,000 Catholic
sailors, and Father Rockliffe and his
associates have, in the few *hort
years in which they have been at the
work, made contact with about 200,-
000.
A native of Liverpool, England,
Father Rockliffe is one of a family
of ten sons and four daughters. Two
of his brothers are Jesuit priests and
two of his sifters, nuns, lire provin
cial of the Jesuit Fathers in California
is his cousin. The Rockliffs have
been staunch Catholics through the
generations, their home a refuge for
the persecuted priests of Elizabethan
days.
While in Atlanta Father Rockliffe
was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. James
Clayton Burke, and the recipient of
many courtesies from the Marist
Fathers and the pastors of
Immaculate Conception, St. Anthony’s
and Our Lady of Lourdes Churches.
THE MOST REV. JOSEPH TS’OEL
recently consecrated a Bishop in his
native China, is a son of a martyr
slain for the faith in the Boxer Re
bellion, a Montreal mission magazine

MIAMI, Fla.—Miss Anna Dill Gam
ble, noted Catholic lav leader, <3f
York, Pa., speaking in the Southeast
under the auspices of the National
Council of Catholic Women, is in the
Miami and Southern Florida District
this week in her lecture tour on in
ternational peace. Miss Gamble ad
dressed an open meeting Monday
evening, January 8, in the auditorium
of Gesu Church. While here Miss
Gamble and Mrs. J. W. McCollum
were guests of Mrs. Thos. E. Grady;
Mrs. McCollum, Diocesan president of
the N. C. C. W.. accompanied Miss
Gamble through Florida.
Miss Gamble attended the Geneva
Peace Conference in 1931 as a rpe-
resentative of the International Coun-

pearing on the program with such
international personages as Madam
Steinburg Engeringh of Holland, Miss
May Dingman and others.
Previously Miss Gamble addressed
the American Association of Univer
sity Women, University of Florida
Chapter, at Gainesville, on Decem
ber 15. In Gainesville she also at
tended a conference tea with repre
sentatives of the Institute of Inter-
American Fairs, conferring also with
its director. Dr. Rollin S. Atwood;
gave the Christmas greeting at the
Twentieth Century Club: was the
Christmas guest-speaker of the Phil
harmonic Society, and lectured before
the Catholic Women’s Club.
Miss Gamble also addressed the
Jacksonville Catholic Women’s Club
December 27; the St. Anthony’s Unit
of the N. S. C. W.. San Antonio
January 1; the Club of Catholic
Women; Lake Wales; the Catholic
Woman’s Club, Tampa: the Catholic
Woman’s Club. Winter Haven; the
Confraternity of Christian Mothers
knd the Newman Club of the Florida
State College for Women; the St.
Augustine Court, Catholic Daughters
of America and the Sodality of the
Children of Mary; the Newman Club
of the University of Florida, and
other organization.
Engagements subsequent to the
Miami address are a meeting of
the St. Augustine N. C. C. W.,
Miami District, at Fort Pierce, quar
terly meeting of the-Diocesan Coun
cil Coard at Sanford, and gatherings
at Fcrt Meyers, Sarasota, Bradentown
and elsewhere.
Miss Gamble will follow her tour
in Florida with lectures in. Georgia
and elsewhere in the South, including
Savannah, where she will appear be
fore the Savannah Federation of
Women’s Clubs, and the Savannah
Rotary Club, then going to Atlanta
to appear before the study club on
