At Christmas Midnight Mass
at Fayetteville, N. C.
(By N. C. W. C. News Service)
FAYETTEVILLE, N. C.—A relative
of the great St. John Berchmans,
who died in Rome in 1621, when he
was 22 years of age, was received in
to the Catholic Church on Christmas
Eve and received first Holy Com
munion at Midnight Mass in St. Pat
rick’s Church here.
The convert is Oliver Cameron, 30
years old, of Hope Mills, N. C., who
frequently walked three miles in
each direction to receive instruction
in the Catholic Faith from the Rev.
Matthew J. Noonan, O. M. I., an as
sistant priest at St. Patrick’s Church
here. In the book “Leaves from the
Note Book of a Missionary,” men
tion is made of a Mr. Berchmans liv
ing in this vicinity “who could justly
claim to be a greatgrand nephew of
St. John Berchmans.” Mr. Cameron’s
uncle married a member of the
Berchmans family.
Cardinal Gibbons, Bishop John Eng
land and Father Price, Co-founder of
Mary knoll, had charge of St. Patrick’s
Church here at various times. The
Midnight Mass celebrated in St. Pat
rick’s by Father Noonan last Christ
mas was said to have had the largest
attendance in the church’s history.
Some 350 people crowded the church
for the Mass, and it is estimated that
there were two Protestants present
for every Catholic.
