WILLIAM M. NIXON
The second Grand Knight of
Patrick Walsh Council, Knights of
Columbus, Augusta, was William
M. Nixon, who headed, the Coun
cil from 1908 to 1910. Mr. Nixon
later served as Chancellor of the
council for many years, and his
brilliant eloquence was an impres
sive feature of many initiation
ceremonials.
Soldiers Have Many
Pressing Engagements
at Macon USO-NCCS Club
Holy Name Rally
in Spartanburg
SPARTANBURG, S. C. — The
Holy Name Society of the 8th and
9th Regiments at Camp Croft
sponsored a rally on Sunday, Au
gust 9, the Rev. Francis O. Ferri,
pastor of St. Paul’s Church, cele
brating Mass on the lawn of St.
Paul the Apostle School, with
Chaplain Liston, spiritual direc
tor of the Holy Name Society as
sisting.
The sermon at the Mass was
delivered by the Right Rev. Msgr.
A. K. Gwynn, pastor of St. Mary’s
Church in Greenville.,
Following the Mass an informal
breakfast was served at the. USO
Club, operated by the National
Catholic Community Service, by
members of the local Council of
Catholic Women.

Funeral in Charleston
CHARLESTON, S. C.—Funeral

MACON, Ga. — During the
heated weeks of July and August,
the soldiers from Camp Wheeler
and Cochran Field have found out
that the summer climate of the
South plays havoc with the creas
es in their uniforms, and so the
boys in khaki have had many
“pressing engagements'’ at the
USO Club operated by the Na
tional Catholic Community Ser
vice here.
William II. Mitchell, director of
the club, has placed at Jhe dis
posal of the soldiers facilities for
washing, cleaning and pressing
their uniforms, not to mention a
kit for shining shoes, and ail that
is necessary for a clean shave.
Other attractions at the club
are the “dark room” where hun
dreds of the boys develop the pro
ducts of them cameras, the record
ing machines that enable them to
send messages home, and the
doughnuts and coffee that are
served to several hundred soldiers
every Sunday morning by the
women of St. Joseph's parish.
The variety shows presented
each Sunday night attract large
audiences, recent programs offer
ing such performers as Lewis Mil-
soh, Macon grocer, in novelty
magic; Miss Dorothy Lowin, in
songs; Billy baniels, of Macon,
and his electric guitar; Joe Kear
ney, from Camp Wheeler, the
Scotch comedian; Dan Holt,
“Georgia Cotton Blossom,” Macon
minstrel man; Jess Smith, Robert
A. Bell, William A. Hill, and Wil
liam Long, the “hill billy” four;
Caesar G. Longo, noted tenor;
with Mrs. S. A. Giglio accompany
ing.
More than 750 soldiers enjoyed
an all-sing program featuring Cap
tain John Marranca, Miss Eunice
Harper and her pupils, Misses
Peggy Joyce ■ Patterson, Harriet
Cork, Margaret Ann Hinton, Joe
Ellen Curton, Barbara Johnson,
Margaret Ann Brown, Earline

services for Mrs. Elizabeth Bridget
Anastash, who died July 27, were
held from St. Patrick’s Church, the
Rev. Charles L. Sheedy officiating.
A native of Charleston, Mrs.
Anastash was the daughter of Ru
fus Puff, of New York, and Mrs.
Bridget Sheedy Puff, of Charles
ton She was the widow of An
drew A. Anastash.
She is survived by the following
cousins, the Rev. Charles Sheedy,
J. P. Sheedy, P. J. Sheedy, Mrs.
J. L. Penck, of Charleston, and
Mrs. B. A. Craig, of Baltimore.

DIES IN CHARLESTON
CHARLESTON, S. C. — The
Rev. Henry F. Wolfe, pastor of
the Sacred Heart Church, Offi
ciated at funeral services for Mar
lin Saboe, who died on August 18.
Mr. Saboe, a native of Moscow,
Russia, had been employed by the
•South Carolina Power Company
for forty-eight years when he re
tired in 1931. He is survived by.
two daughters, Airs. Frank Be-
none, of San Francisco, and Miss
Ezsou Saboe, of Charleston, and
one son, Martin Saboe, of Charles
ton.

services for Miss Margaret Ellen
Morrison, who died on July 21,

Miss Morrison was the daughter
of James and Catherine Riley
Morrison, both of Ireland. She is
survived by a sister, Miss AgneS
Morrison, of Charleston; a broth
er, William F. Morrison, of Jack-jc
sonville, and two nieces and a
nephew.
