Mass is now being offered for
the men of the Navy Pre-Flight
School each Sunday morning in
the chapel of the University of
Georgia. • .
Many Georgians have admired
the magnificent painting of the
interior of St. Peter’s Basilea in
Rome which adorns the back wall
of the chapel platform, and it
seems appropriate that the altar
upon which Mass is offered should
iiave such a background.
During Lent, an evening Mass
was celebrated each Friday in Con
nor Hall, on the University campus
for the men of (he Pre-Flight
School.
Grotto of Lourdes
Erected on Lawn of
Church in Douglas
(Special to The Bulletin)
* DOUGLAS, Ga.—A Grotto of
Lourdes, with beautiful art stone
statutes of Our Lady of the Im-
maculate Conception and St. Bei-
nadette executed by a famed art
ist in New York, has been erected
on the lawn of St. Paul s church
here. .
“This devotional shrine is in
tended to lift men’s hearts to God
.and His Blessed Mother, and is in
memory of the appearance of the
Blessed Mother at • Lourdes, in
France, in 1858, declared the Rev.
Frederick V. Gilbert, O. M. I., pas
tor of the church.
“Those who have read the ex
cellent book of Franz Werfel and
tlfose who have seen the screen
adaptation of the story of Lourdes
are familiar with its meaning,
Father Gilbert slated: “To the
humble Bernadette, a shepherd
girl, the Blessed Mother appeared.
In a doubting age, mitacles have
followed without number and con
tinue today. A board of doctors,
non-Catholic, judge by strict stan
dards all cases reported to be mir
acles and have attested to power
beyond that of man in hundreds
of cases of instantaneous cures.’
"This is not a form of idolatry or
image worship.” Father Gilbert
commented. “Catholics are ex
pressly forbidden to worship im
ages. Even in the Old Testament
those who worshipped images were
condemned because they were like
the images they worshipped, hav
ing eyes they saw not, ears and
heard not, lips and spoke not.’
“Christ commanded that we
should worship God alone, ’ the
pastor added. This is the very
first of the ten commandments.
We venerate the Virgin Mary be
cause she is the Mother of God,
we honor her as we honor our
earthly mothers, because slie was
given to us all as a mother.
“Thus we do not worship im
ages, but we honor those who are
represented by them, much as we
honor the flag of our country for
what it signifies,” Father Gilbert
stressed. “Thus we honor Mary,
the Mother of God.
“This is not to offer arguments
to those who do not believe as we
do, but to explain our veneration
of the Mother of God and the
beautiful grotto,” he concluded.
