FATHER SMITH
The Rev. George Lewis Smith,
pastor of St. Mary’s Help of Chris
tians Church, Aiken, S. C., is also
pastor of the mission parish of
Our Lady of Peace, in North Au
gusta, S. C., and of the Church of
Our Lady of the Valley, which was
erected last year on U. S. High
way No. 1, between Aiken and
Augusta, next to the Horse Creek
Valley Handicraft and Welfare
Center which is conducted by the
Sisters of Our Lady of Christian
Doctrine.
Funeral Services for
Admiral John Gaffney
Held in Charleston
CHARLESTON, S. C.— Funeral
services with full military honors
for Rear Admiral John J. Gaffney,
a native of Charleston, who died
in Oakland, Cal., November 28,
were held here, at St. Patrick’s
Church, with interment at St.
Lawrence Cemetery. Monsignor
Joseph L. O’Brien, S. T. D. LL. D„
pastor of St. Patrick’s offered the
Requiem Mass.
Officers stationed at the Char
leston Navy Yard acted as
honorary pallbearers, with Navy
enlisted men as active pallbearers.
Admiral Gaffney, 56 years old,
was born and reared here and
was graduated from the College
of Charleston in 1912. Soon af
terwards, he was commissioned as
an ensign in the Navy Supply
Corps, in which he had served
ever since.
Between 1941 and 1945 Admiral
Gaffney commanded the supply
depot of the 14th Naval District
at Pearl Harbor. From then, un
til his death, he headed the sup
ply depot at Oakland.
Admiral Gaffney is survived by
his wife, Mrs. Wahneta Walsh
Gaffney; a son, three daughters,
two brothers, three sisters and six
grandchildren.
Among those attending the fu
neral was Admiral Gaffney's
brother-in-law, Brigadier General
Roland F. Walsh.
Sacred Heart School
PTA Meets in Augusta
AUGUSTA, Ga.—Mrs. Neil
Callahan, president, conducted the
December meeting of the Parent-
Teacher Association of the Sacred
Heart School, held on December
10, in the school auditorium.

There was a discussion of plans
for the annual Christmas tree for
the pupils at the 'chool and the
committee appointed to make ar
rangements for the affair will in
clude'Mrs. John Y. Smith, Mrs.
Harry Hickman, and Mrs. W. A.
Lucky. Mrs. Harry Shurley was
given the assignment of selecting
Christmas gifts for the Sisters of
Mercy who teach at the Sacred
Heart School, and Mrs. Owen
Schweers to select and purchase
gifts for the priests attached to the
Sacred Heart Church.
The association will continue its
waste paper collection, and plans
>i hold a rummage sale in the near
future.
Following the meeting refresh
ments were served in (he school
cafeteria by Mrs. Oaksin Altoonian
and *Mrs. Ernest Dinkins.

SERGEANT EDWARD OZBOLT
FUNERAL IN ROCKY FORD
ROCKY FORD, Ga—Funeral
services for Sergeant Edward P.
Ozbolt, were held December 17
at St. Joseph’s Church, ’Father
Edward W. Smith officiating.
Sergeant Ozbolt, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Peter Ozbolt, of Rocky Ford,
enlisted in the U. S. Army in
May, 1959. After arriving over
seas he was attached to the Fourth
Division, 22nd Infantry Regi
ment, Company I, and was killed
in the battle of Hurtgen Forest,
Germany, in December 1944. His
body was brought to his home city
for re-interment.
Sergeant Ozbolt is survived by
his parents; three sisters, Mrs.
Howard Cornelius and Miss Carol
Ozbolt, of Rocky Ford, Miss Olga
Ozbolt, of Savannah; a brother,
Matthew Ozbolt, Albany, and his
grandmother, Mrs. Joseph Krulic,
Rocky Ford.
GREGORY J. O’HARA
FUNERAL IN MACON
MACON, Ga.—Funeral services
for Chief Machinist’s Mate Greg
ory Jerome O’Hara, who died at a
hospital in Iceland, February 21,
1942, were held at St. Joseph’s
Cemetery here, Father Robert T.
Bryant, S. J., officiating.
Mr. O’Hara was born in Macon.
He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in
1928 and was the first member of
St. Joseph’s parish here to lose
Ills life in World War II.
JAMES A. EMMERICH
DIES IN GEORGETOWN
GEORGETOWN, S- C.—Funeral
services for James A. Emmerick,
superintendent of the Internatioa-
af Paper Company’s" plant here,
were held December 15, at St.
Mary’s Church, Father Albert A.
Faase officiating.
Mr. Emmerick is survived by
his wife; his mother; two daugh
ters; a son apd two brothers.
JACK HALEY
DIES IN ELBERTON
ELBERTON, Ga. — Funeral ser
vices for Jack Haley were held at
St. Mary’s Church here on Decem
ber 13.
Mr. Haley, a native of Ver
mont, was a pioneer executive in
the granite industry in this sec
tion.
He is survived by his wife; a
son, Edward Haley, of Hartford,
Conn., and a daughter, Miss Ag
nes Haley, Montpelier, Vt.

DIES IN ATLANTA
ATLANTA, Ga.—Following ser
vices here at which Father Wil
liam A. Maguire, S. M., officiated,
the body of Col. Edward Bernard
Schlant, who died December 8,
were taken to Arlington National
Cemetery for interment.
Colonel Schlant is survived by
his wife; a daughter, Miss Elaine
Acker Schlant; two sons, Edward
B. Schlant, Jr., and Robert C.
Schlant, all of Atlanta; a sister,
Mrs. Richard Walroad, Roanoke,
Va., and two brothers, Horman S.
Schlant, Buffalo, N. Y.; and Major
Raymond L. Schlant, Germany.
