GOAL OF BRITISH PILGRIMS
Hooded monks stand beneath a shady tree while below them in the
valley stands the Buckfast Abbey Church. Twentieth century Bene
dictine monks worked 30 years to rebuild the great medieval Abbey
Church of Our Lady. This will be one of the many Marian shrines to
be visited, August 30-September 7, by some 400 British Catholics, in
a nine-day motor coach pilgrimage through 22 English counties. The
unique tour has been organized by the Catholic Truth Society of
London. Photo from British Information Services. (NC Photos.)
SENTENCE FROM BISHOP'S STATEMENT
NCLUDED IN DEMOCRATIC PLATFORM
(X. C. W. C. News Service)
CHICAGO.—A sentence from the
1951 Bishops’ Statement, “God’s
Law: the Measure of Man’s Con
duct." is incorporated in the Dem
ocratic Party platform adopted - at
the national convention here.
The original sentence read: “Dis
honesty, slander, detraction, and
defamation of character are as
truly transgressions of God s com
mandments when resorted to by
men in political life as they are
for all other men.’’
As the sentence appears in the
platform the phrase "political life”
is changed to read "public life.”
This excerpt from the Bishops’
Statement appears in the platform
section under the subheading of
“Strengthening Democracy.” The
platform did not identify the
source of the excerpt.
The sentence was part of a para
graph from the Bishops' Statement
which Senator William Benton of
Connecticut had proposed to the
platform commitee should be in
corporated in the platform.
“I commend the entire State
ment (of the Bishops) to the com
mittee but the particular para
graph I suggest for our platform is
headed ‘Moraltiy and Politics’,”
Senator Benton said.
The paragraph reads as follows:
“In politics, the principle that
‘anything goes’ simply because peo
ple are thought not to expect any
high degree of honor in politicians
is grossly wrong. We have to recov
er that sense of personal obliga
tion on the part of the voter and
that sense of public trust on the
part of the elected official which
give meaning and dignity to polit
ical life. Those who are selected
for office by their fellow men are
entrusted with grave responsibili
ties They have been selected not
for self-enrichment but for con
scientious public service. In their
speech and in their actions they
are bound by the same laws of jus
tice and charity which bind pri
vate individuals in every other
sphere of human activity. Dishon
esty, slander, detraction and defa
mation of character are as truly
transgression of God’s command
ments when resorted to by men in
political life as they are for all
other men.”
