A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE
There's a world of difference between this starving- Korean baby and
the bouncing American baby in the picture on the wall. Both the
same age, the waif was left at the Maryknoll Sisters’ back door at
Pusan, Korea, one of hundreds of such “back door babies" cared for
at the Maryknoll Clinic there. The waif was baptized Joey. Sister
Agnus Therese, M.D., of Philadelphia, is showing the poor waif the
picture of her niece. After several months of special feeding, ‘ little
Joey now rivals his American counterpart. (NC Photos)
Holy See Recognizes Glenmary Sisters
As Canonically Erected Congregation
GLENDALE, Ohio.—(NC)—The
Glenmary Sisters, community of
religious women affiliated with the
Home Missioners of America, have
received official recognition from
the Holy See.
Archbishop Karl J. Alter of Cin
cinnati presided at a formal cere
mony at the Glenmary mother-
house at which the new religious
congregation was canonically erect-,
ed.
Notice of the Holy See’s nihil ob-
stat was sent to Archbishop Alter
by the Sacred Congregation of. Re
ligious.
In constituting the Glenmary
Sisters a religious congregation of
“Diocesan Right,” the Holy See
placed th# Sisters under the Arch
bishop’s supervision.
Despite their lack of official sta
tus in the 11 years since they were
first organized, the Glenmary Sis
ters have lived as religious, con
forming to a routine of religious
exercises similar to that followed
in canonically erected congrega
tions. Their rule is modeled on that
of the Dominican Sisters.
Dominican Sisters of Adrian,
Mich., have been training the Glen
mary Sisters at the Glendale con
vent for several years and since last
year have been in charge of the
Sisters’ novitiate.
The next step in the development
of the religious congregation will
be the approval of its constitution.
The Glenmary Sisters were or
ganized in Glendale in 1941 to as
sist the Glenmary Fathers in their
rural apostolate. They now have
permanent centers in Ohio, Ken
tucky, and Virginia, and, in addi
tion, teach summer schools in sev
eral other locations in Ohio and the
Southeastern states. The commun
ity has about 35 members.
They are engaged in religious
teaching and in social and medi
cal service. In addition to their re
ligious training, they also study
nursing, dietetics, home econom
ics, and similar subjects.
The Glenmary Sisters wear a
gray wool tunic and cape, with a
white collar and cuffs, a black
cincture, and a black veil:
Their progress as a distinct con
gregation is keeping pace with
that of the Glenmary Fathers, who
received the official approval of
the Holy See in 1947.
IT IS REPORTED that the 37th
International Eucharistic Congress
will be held at Lourenco Marques,
Mozambique, Portuguese Africa, in
1957. The next, or 36th Congress,
will be held in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil, in 1955. The 35th Congress
was held recently at Barcelona,
Spain.
