Knights of Columbus Warn Americans to
Scrutinize Operations of UNESCO Lest
They Endanger Constitutional Rignts
LOS ANGELES—(NC)—Unless
Americans wish to endanger the
God-given rights of our Constitu
tion, they should carefully examine
all UNESCO activities, the Su
preme Council of the Knights of
Columbus warned here.
In a resolution passed at the
final session of their 70th annual
Supreme Convention, the Knights
condemned certain proposals of
UNESCO as “contrary to the nat
ural law and the deeply religious
disposition of the founders of our
nation.”
Regarding the United Nations
Education, Scientific and Cultural
Organization, the Supreme Coun
cil’s resolution stated;
“UNESCO, in some of its ex
pressed views, advances theories
which would support birth control
as a truly scientific solution of
problems of population and human
betterment.
“This agency of the United Na
tions, with all due regard for the
nobility of its intentions, in this
and other of its activities and pro
posals suggests not only a lack of
understanding, sympathy and re
spect for American traditions and
history, but a disposition to fol
low a course which is, in essential
elements, contrary to the natural
law and the deeply religious dis
positions of the founders of our na
tion.”
In view of thi s.the resolution
stated, the Supreme Council of
the Knights of Columbus “earnest
ly recommends to its members and
to their fellow Americans, close
and careful scrutiny of UNESCO
operations and proposals to the
end that they may not diminish or
nullify the God-given rights recog
nized by our Constitution as es
sential to the pursuit of life, liberty
and happiness.”
Another resolution was adopted
by the Supreme Council protesting
the practice of genocide in coun
tries under Soviet control.
The council also protested the
partitioning of Ireland and voted
to petition the State Department
to exert such influence as is
within its power to bring about a
united Ireland.
Their advertising campaign has
been so successful that the Knights
of Columbus have decided to in
crease their advertising appropria
tions by 50 per cent.
The K. of C. convention here
voted to spend $750,000 on the
campaign during the coming year.
They increased their budget
after Supreme Advocate Luke E.
Hart reported that the campaign
had resulted in more than a mil
lion incuiries. Of those who an
swered the ads, he said, nearly
100,000 have been enrolled for
instruction in the Faith by mail.
The Knights received con
gratulatory messages from His
Holiness Pope Pius VII, Presi
dent Truman and Archbishop Ara-
leto Giovanni Cicognani, Apostolic
delegate to the United States.
The Holy Father’s message
singled out “for special mention”
the Knights* “praiseworthy work
. . on behalf of Catholic youth.”
Gerald C. Riley. Los Angeles at
torney, was elected to the only
vacancy on the Supreme Board of
Directors.
He is the first Southern Cali-
fornian to hold the high office
since 1927, when Appellate Justice
Thomas P. White was elected to
a similar position.
Mr. Riley is past California
State Deputy. His elec'ion filled
the vacancy created by Judge Ed
ward Molkenbubr of San F.rn-
cisco, who declined nomination
for re-election.
The other four members of the
Supreme Board of Directors were
re-elected.
They are James W. McCormick
of Westerly. R. I.; Dr. Charles W.
Henney ol Portage. Wis.; Sheriff
William M. Lennox of Philadelphia
and R. Conroy Scoggins of Hous
ton.
St. Paul. Minn., was selected as
the site for next year’s conven
tion.
Preaching at the Mass in St.
Vincent’s church, here, which
opened the convention, Archbishop
J. Francis A. McIntyre of Los An
geles called on the Knights to re
main “the sturdiest of Americans”
and to continue to uphold the
American txadition of being a reli
gious nation.
President Truman, in a message
sent to the convention, paid trib
ute to Father Michael J. McGiv-
ney. founder of the Kni ts of Co
lumbus. He called on the Kni'"' ts
to continue their labors in su>—"t
of the ideals ‘ of charity, unity, fra
ternity and patriotism.”
