ta, two priests, Father Francis E.
McGrath and Father Edward Smith,
with Brother Vincent Wilmes, of
the Home Missioners of America

Ohio, to assume charge of the mis
sionary parish in Statesboro and
to do missionary work in Bulloch,
Candler, Evans, Effingham, Jen
kins, Screven and Tattnall Coun
ties.
The following summer, the late
Father McGrath who was then pas
tor in Statesboro, invited a group
of Glenmary Sisters, to come to
Georgia to conduct religious vaca
tion classes. That year they gave
catechetical instructions at the
home of Miss Molly Lehr, near
Rocky Ford. The children from
the area being brought to and
from classes each day.
Three years ago, when Father
Edward Smith was pastor of the
parish in Statesboro, the Glenmary
Sisters returned again to conduct
summer vacation religious classes
at Miss Lehr’s home, only that
year the boys were quartered in a
camp and the girls and the Sisters
resided at the Lehr home.
Last year, with Father Joseph
Nagele as pastor in Statesboro, the
Glenmary Sisters returned again
to conduct a vacation religious
school at the home of Miss Lehr,
who spared no effort to make the
Sisters and the children feel at
home:
This summer, the vacation school
was conducted in Statesboro, but
because the Glenmary Sisters were
not available, the classes were con
ducted by Missionary Franciscan
Sisters of the Immaculate Con
ception, from St. Benedict’s Con
vent in Savannah.
