YOU CAN WIN CONVERTS

By REV. JOHN A. O'BRIEN
.(University of Notre Darae)-
To help sincere truth seekers
find Christ and His Church, one
doesn’t have to be an adult. The
best tiihe to become a mission
ary for Christ is when one is
young--and the
younger the
better.
Eddie Leech
of Holy Trinity
parish in Dallas,
Texas, is -only
a teen-ager, a
senior of Jesuit
High School,
but has helped
to lead another teen-ager, Ann
Phillips, into the fold of Christ.
Now Ann’s whole family—her
parents, brother and sister — are
Catholics. Thus did Ed start a
spiritual chain reaction which
netted five souls for Christ.
“I’m much interested, Ed,” I
said, “in getting every Catholic
boy and girl of high-school age
interested in sharing the precious
treasure of their holy Catholic
faith with churchless chums and
neighbors. Christ wants us not to
hoard our treasure but to share
it with others. If our Catholic
people are to extend Christ’s
kingdom in the souls of men and
thus aid them in achieving their
salavation, they can’t start too
young. Tell us, Ed, how you in
terested Ann in your holy faith.”
“About two years ago,” said
Ed, “the Phillips family moved
in across the street from us. The
whole family is friendly and
likeable and our family and
theirs soon became acquainted.
Ann was around my age and we
quickly became friends. We saw
a lot of one another that sum
mer and we talked about many
things. I told her how much my
religion meant to me and how
wonderful it was to receive our
Blessed Lord in Holy Commun
ion.
“Ann had a deeply spiritual
nature and she asked me a lot
of questions about it. She noticed
that I didn’t eat meat on Fri
day and she wanted to know
why. I explained that as Christ
died on Calvary’s Cross for us
on Friday, we sought to show our
love for our Crucified Redeem
er and to do a bit of penance
for our sins by that little act of
self-denial.
“I pointed out' that we owe a
great debt of gratitude to Al
mighty God for all He suffered
for us and for our redemption.
We try to keep that truth before
our eyes by the devotion of the
Way of the Cross, in which we
meditate upon the. sufferings of
our Lord as He carried His
Cross to Calvary.”
“Did you ever bring Ann into
a church so she could see the
Stations of the Cross?”
“Yes, and I brought her to
Mass with me as well. She was

deeply impressed with the rev

to follow it in a general way...”
“It always helps,” I broke in,
“to bring a person to our ser
vices even though they do not
understand the meaning of all
the ceremonies, they can’t fail
to sense the reverence of the
worshipers. The visitor quickly
perceives that they mean busi
ness, that they haven’t come for
a merely social visit.”
“That’s true, Father. Ann no
ticed that at once. Then I ad
vised her to drop in at the Rec
tory and see our pastor, Father
Charles A. Cannon, C. M. about
taking instructions.
“She did and Father Cannon
assigned Fr. Thompson to instruct
her. She went twice a week and
Father baptized her in Novem
ber and gave her Holy Commun
ion. That was one of the hap
piest days in her life.
“The following February Ann
was stricken with a serious ill
ness in which she lingered for
several months. The Fathers
brought her Holy Communion
every week. Fortified by the
sacraments, she died in May —
a beautiful death. Her family
saw the great consolation which
Ann derived from her holy re
ligion. The following summer the
four of them took instructions
and were received into the
Church. I like to think it was
in answer to Ann’s prayers.”
“Doubtless it was, Ed,” I said.
“You and they have someone to
pray for you now. Incidentally,
I’m glad to catch up with your
pastor, as I haven’t heard of him
for years. Some twenty odd years
ago I preached the sermon at
his First Solemn Mass at Ives-
dale, Illinois. Say hello to him
for me and tell him to get more
of his teen-agers to share their
faith, as you did so well. That’s
the message we must bring to
all our youth and get it translat
ed into action at once.”
Archbishop Warns: “We Do Not
Pray Enough For Nations Leaders”
MACON, Ga. — His Excellecy
Gerald P. O’Hara, D. D. J.C.D.,
Archbishop Bishop of Savannah-
Atlanta and Apostolic Delegate to
Great Britain struck out at
“Peaceful Co-existence” in an in
terview with George Landry, of
the Macon Telegraph.
The interview in THE TELE
GRAPH read:
“Speaking as a humble priest.
I fear that we do not pray enough
for those who are in civil authori
ty and charged with the respon
sibility of guiding and safeguard
ing our nation. We should pray,
“he advised” that God will en
lighten and strengthen them in
the fulfillmet of their awsome res
ponsibility.”
“He described the recent Red
let-up in persecution of religious
groups behind the Iron Curtain
as being “calculated to throw
the free Nations off balance.”
“The archbishop sees no over
coming of Red rule by people
who live under it.” There is only
patience and suffering .....
“Only those who have lived
under Soviet rule,” he said,
“know its horrors and understand
that it means ultimate slavery.”
“He warned the Communists
“are trying their best to under
mine and take over the United
States and every other free coun
try. They are doing this day and
night, constantly and cleverly and
resentessly. They have plans all
made.”
“Of the Commuist plan for
world domination, Archbishop
O’Hara spoke bluntly. “There is”
he warned, “no one free nation
in the world today in which the
process of Communist infiltration
is not going on actively ad vigor
ously at the preset time.”
“The only hope in overcoming
the Red menace, he said lies
“in a change in Heart on the part
of the Communists. That’s the on
ly answer and there is need 1 of
praying for them too.”

“This she is certainly to do,
not only within the walls of the
church and sacristy, but also
in the open crying, ‘from the
rooftops,’ to use the Lord’s
words, in the frontline in the
midst of the struggle that rages
between truth and error, vir

world and the Kingdom of God

Christ Its Saviour.”
It is to be hoped that these
vigorous utterances of the Car
dinal and the Pope will put an
end to the demand that the
priest keep out of “politics.”
