HOLY FATHER
BROADCASTS
FROM SICKBED
(Radio, N.C.W.C.
NEWS SERVICE)
VATICAN CITY — His Holi
ness Pope Pius XII was well
enough on Sunday (Dec. 5) to
broadcast a radio blessing from
his sickbed to the faithful gath
ered in St. Peter’s Basilica for
the Marian Year’s last beatifica
tion.
The Holy Father broadcast an
other blessing to the closing cere
mony of the Marian Year on
Wednesday, December 8. His
Eminence Eugene Cardinal Tis-
serant, Dean of the Sacred Col
lege, took the Pope’s place at
the ceremony, a solemn Te Deum
in the Basilica of St. Mary Major.
At the conclusion of the beati
fication’s Benediction ceremony
on Sunday, at which the Holy
Father would ordinarily have
been present, his voice was car
ried to the Basilica by loud
speakers. The voice was con
siderably weaker than usual, but
by no means entirely spent as
he extended his blessing. He
said:
“To our very devoted children
of beloved Rome, whom We feel
as close to us in prayer as We
are close to the Divine Master in
Our suffering, and in Our fulfill
ment of His ever good and benign
will, We impart with Our heart
turned to the Lord and the Im
maculate Virgin, Our paternal
Apostolic Blessing.”
After this brief message, which
was also carried by the radio
networks of many Western Eu
ropean countires, the crowd in
St. Peter’s cheered. (The Pope’s
voice was heard later throughout
the United States over the NBC
network, which broadcast a re
cording of his message followed
by an English translation).
