BOOK REVIEWS
(Continued from Page 2,1)
why we have fears and anxieties*
are discussed; as well as current
topics such as the atom bomb,
relativity, war, Soviet peace tac
tics and Communism. One of the
most striking chapters is on the
death of Stalin. Bishop Sheen de
livered this talk ten days before
Stalin died.
Never forgetting his primary
role as spiritual leader, he dis
cusses such spiritual matters as
conscience, tolerance, reparation;
then he ponders with us the oft-
asked question: “Is life worth
living?” From his many travels
and varied experiences he in
cludes several humorous incidents
which, scattered generously
throughout the book, greatly en
liven his presentation of serious
matters.
In the original edition, this, book
showed its popularity by remain
ing on the best seller list for some
time. With its combination of
timely ideas, sound thinking and
illustrative anecdotes, it is a book
to enjoy now and to refer to in
the future.
DESPERATE DRUMS, by Eva K.
Betz, (St. Anthony Guild), $2.00.
(Reviewed by Francine
Zsuffa, age 10)
This is the exciting and inspir-
) ng story of three young boys
who lived at the time of the
American Revolution and the
fight for our independence.
It begins when the three boys
enlist in the Continental Army
under General Washington, one
of our great American heroes.
We read of the famous battle of
Trenton and Aquonock, fought
between the American and Bri
tish fleets; of the struggle of
wits and skill when two of the
bos^s fight against the raging
j apids of the Passaic River, risk
ing their lives on a mission for
General Washington.
In this book we meet General
Washington. Benjamin Franklin
and Betsy Ross and other patri
ots who helped build this great
country. I liked the book because
it tells the customs in the days
of the Revolution.
ander).
The Deep South of the nine
teenth century, when it was visit
ed by the yellow fever epidemic,
forms the setting for this novel
by a Southern Catholic author.
John Wildeman is Doctor of Eng
lish and assistant professor of
English at L. S. U. This is his
third book and second novel.
His protagonists are four peo
ple who live at Mrs. Devereaux’s
genteel boarding house in Mo
bile, and, while there, know the
fever, pain and nausea of the yel
low jack. These four people, with
separate lives, independent des
tinies and individual sufferings
re-live memories of their various
pasts.
Two wei’e to die young. Of
these, the young man Bob is most
appealing. Young, sensitive and
naive, he is loved by everyone.
His death leaves a sadness and a
sense of the unfathomable mys
tery of God’s providence.
