ATLANTA, Ga.—The Atlanta
Deanery of the Diocesan Council
of Catholic Women held its quar
terly meeting Sunday, June 5, in
Athens, Georgia, at the Georgian
Hotel.
Mrs. John S. Correll, president,
opened the afternoon meeting.
Father Walter Donovan, pastor of
St. Joseph’s Church in Athens,
read the prayer to Our Lady of
Good Counsel and extended a
warm welcome to every one pres
ent. When the roll was called it
was noted with pleasure that there
were members present from Toc-
coa, Gainesville, and Elberton.
Father Michael Manning, of
Gainesville, spoke briefly and
with a great deal of humor, then
pointed with pride to Mrs. Joseph
C. Beltran, mother of Rev. Joseph
Beltran, who has recently been
ordained for this Diocese.
Mrs. A. F. Campbell, chairman
of War Relief Services, stressed
the fact that a chairman should
be appointed in each parish to
collect clothes for the Pope’s
storeroom. This year special em
phasis is to be made on collecting
clothes to be sent directly to
Monsignor Kirk in Rome.
Splendid talks were given by
Per Oxneval of Bergen, Norway,
and Yoshitatsu Sudo of Tokyo,
Japan, both of whom are study
ing in the United States under
the Mutual Defense Assistance
program. Both spoke of the posi
tion of women in their countries.
In Norway women have taken up
every phase of business life, and
can even be found on the high
seas. In Japan, although women
have won much new freedom, few
can practice it as there are so few
of the modern conveniences.
The meeting closed with prayer
by Father Donovan.
