Launch Campaign For Diocesan Development

SAVANNAH, Ga.—On Sunday
April 8th a campaign for. funds
for Diocesan development was
launched throughout the Dio
cese.
Headquarters for co-ordina
tion of the actiivties of the par
ish, regional, and diocesan
organizations for the Savannah-
Atlanta Parochial and Diocesan
Development Campaign have
been established at 44 Hunter
Street, S. W., Atlanta. All cor
respondence should be addressed
to P. O. Box 5077. Atlanta 2,
Georgia. The telephone number
is ALpine 3559.
Along with the campaign
directors, the staff includes
stenographers who will, handle
the vast amount of paper work
connected with the campaign.
The headquarters office will
be the focal point for planning
and directing the campaign, and
assisting those who volunteer,
their time and services to the
work. Preparation and distribu
tion of the necessary forms,
posters, and other campaign
material will be done at cam
paign headquarters.
Newspapers, television and
radio will be utilized to bring
the story of the campaign and
its activities to members of the
diocese. Feature stories and per
sonal statements from clergy
and lay leaders will be used
to supplement news stories.
Subscribers to the fund are
assured that no commissions are
being paid to anyone in this
campaign. Headquarters person
nel are working on reasonable
salaries, paid from the cam
paign’s fixed fee. The campaign,
is under the direction of Tho
mas R. Finn & Associates of
Kansas City, Missouri.

Just elected as Coadjutor of the Benedictine monastery at
Belmont, N. C., and president of Belmont Abbey College is, at
left, the Very Rev. Walter A. Coggin, O. S. B. His election by the
monks of the Abbey is subject to approval by the Sacred Congre
gation at the Holy See. With Father Walter, at right, is the Abbot,
the Rt. Rev. Vincent George Taylor, O. S. B., who will continue as
Abbot of Belmont Abbey and also as the Ordinary of Belmont-

A project intended to arouse
wide interest in the Bishop’s
Campaign for Pai'ochial and
Diocesan Deveopment is the
planned exchange of pulpits on
Sunday, April 15 and on Sunday,
April 29.
Bishop Francis E. Hyland
said the purpose of the exchange
is to bring forcibly to the at
tention of the parishioners in
the . diocese the meaning and ex
tent of the campaign and to
show clearly the teamwork and
co-operation which is being dis
played by the clergy in making
the campaign a success.
‘We are all prone to consider
only the problems of our own
parishes and missions,” Bishop
Hyland said.” I believe the
pulpit exchange will give a
broader outlook of diocesan ac
tivities to every Catholic.”
The visiting priests and the
pulpits they will occupy this

Sails For Rome
NEW YORK, N. Y.—Archbishop
Gerald P. O'Hara, Bishop of Sav-
annah-Allanla and Apostolic Del
egate to Great Britain, sailed for
Rome April 9th,
His Excellency will travel from
Rome to London and his duties as
Apostolic Delegate of She Holy
See.
BELMONT, N. C.—The monks
of Belmont Abbey have elected
The Very Rev. Walter A. Cog
gin, O.S.B., as coadjutor to the
present Abbot, The Rt, Rev. Vin
cent George Taylor, O.S.B.
Until the designation of the
coadjutor has been confirmed by
the Holy See, which may be
within the next week or ten
days, no official comment can
be made concerning Father Wal
ter’s duties at Belmont Abbey.
Abbot Vincent, however,
states, “I feel confident that the
Holy See will endorse the rec
ommendation.”
Upon the confirmation by the
Holy See, Father Walter will as
sume the administration of the
monastery and the presidency of
Belmont Abbey College.
Father Walter was born at
Richmond, Virginia on February
10, 1916, and has been head of
the Department of Philosophy at
Belmont Abbey College, having
received his doctorate from the
Catholic University of America,
Washington, D. C.
