THE ROSARY OF OUR LADY.
by Romano Guardini, (Kenedy),
$2.50.
(Reviewed by Flannery
O’Connor)
The first most notice
able characteristic of Monsignor
Guardini’s writing is the total
absence of pious cliche. When he
considers the doctrine or liturgy
or practice of the Church, he re
thinks these in the light of
modem difficulties and preoc
cupations. This is often attempt
ed with‘"less'success because the
attempt is made by one who sees
these difficulties and preoccupa
tions as being those of another.
With Monsignor Guardini, one
feels 'that these difficulties are
his own, that he does not stand
on a height above the modern
mind, that his is the modern
mind coping with its own agon
izing problems but infused with
pleasing to Our Lord because
they are His own words of praise
and thanksgiving.
Our Lady’s grand canticle, the
Magnificat, is also newly trans
lated in . this book. No more
beautiful words of supplication
were 1 ever composed since time
began. “My soul proclaims the
Lord’s greatness and my spirit
rejoices in God my Savior.”
Mrs. Ryan’s introduction is
helpful in producing an appreci
ation of the psalms', and the
brief summaries of the prayers
show their relation to the New
Testament and how they are
used in the liturgy. The psalms
make up the greater portion of
the Divine Office, the official
prayer of the Church, which
priests and religious chant or
read each day. , V

grace.
When he turns«his attention to
the Rosary then, it is not to re
commend its daily recitation
whole as a cure-all for every
spiritual infirmity, but to redis
cover how it should be prayed
and to relate the mysteries to
the growth of Christ in the in
dividual. “The Rosary is. not a
road, but a place, and it has no
goal but a depth. To linger in it
has great compensations.” It is
concerned with Christ as His exis
tence was made possible by the'
consent of His mother and Mon
signor Guardini shows that it
should relate in meditation to
the birth and growth of Christ
in the person praying as these
are made possible by his consent.
He considers that the basis for
all exaggerations about Mary is
her uniqueness but he feels that
these exaggerations are useless
and harmful “because the
simpler the word expressing a
truth, the more tremendous and
at the same time the more deep
ly realized do the facts become.”
This sums up the effect of his
own writing. He proceeds slow
ly and with a simplicity that re
veals a depth of meaning to the
reader who is likewise willing to
be in no hurry. Monsignor
Guardini has written extensive
ly oil Dostoievsky and one feels
this wealth of cultural back
ground. in his spiritual writing.

Perkins Ryan, (Fides), $3.95.
(Reviewed by Nita Phillips)
This modern translation of the
psalms is among eight publica

staff of the Thomas More As
sociation for presentation to the
Board of Directors, who will
choose one of the eight as “the
most distinguished, contribution
to Catholic publishing in 1J155.”
The., award will be given on May
4, in Chicago.
The word psalms means songs.
This, of course, 1 is the book of
God’s own songs, about half of
them attributed to the human
authorship of David, the others
to various Old Testament people,
some known, some unknown, all
directly inspired by God. They
are the songs that Jesus Himself,
like others of 1 His time, sang or
recited at mealtime, on feast
days during His hidden life, at
public prayer with the Apostles.
