LETTERS FROM BARON
FRIEDRICH VON HUGEL TO A
NIECE, edited with an introduc
tion by Gwendolen Greene,
(Reg'nery), $3.75.
(Reviewed by Flannery
O’Connor)
A Protestant minister once re
marked to the reviewer that he
had never met an American
Catholic priest who had read
Earon von Hugel. Since Fried
rich von Hugel is frequently
considered, along with Newman
and Acton, as one of the great
Catholic scholars, it is to be
hoped that the minister’s ac
quaintance with priests was
limited. With the publication of
Earon von Hugel’s letters to his
niece, this great man and his
vigorous, intelligent piety may
become better known to Amer
icans.
The letters were written to
Gwendolen Greene, then about
thirty and an Anglican. Baron
von Hugel’s intention was to
strengthen her religious sense
by guiding her reading, largely
in non-religious subjects. He
warns her against the mentality
that reads only religious litera
ture, however good, and allows
the fascinations of Grace to
deaden the expressions of nature
and thereby “lose the material
for Grace to work on.” Warning
her against this, he says, “how
thin and abstract, or how strain
ed and unattractive, the religion
of most women becomes, owing
to this their elimination of re
ligion's materials and divinely
intended tensions!”
He advises her also not to be
“churchy,” to love Holy Com
munion but “tactfully, unironic-
ally, to escape from all Eucha
ristic Guilds ... to care for
God’s work in the world . . .
and yet (again quite silently,
with full contrary encourage
ment to others who are helped
by such literature) never open
ing a Church paper or maga
zine.” This last piece of advice,
so gallantly subversive to the
organizational appetite, may ex
plain handily why Baron von
Hugel has not been widely read
in American Catholic circles, but
the reader who has been fed
(sufficiently) on Irish piety may
find Baron von Hugel’s letters a
welcome relief.
His niece became a Roman
Catholic two years after his
death.
THE CATHOLIC FAMILY
BIBLE, published by John J.
Crawley and Co., $10.95.
(Reviewed by Leo J. Zuber)
A few short years ago the
Catholic Family Bible put in its
appearance, as an attractive and
inviting volume. The publishers
call it the “most beautiful of all
Bibles.” There will be those to
dispute that superlative claim
but there is none to say that it
is not a beautiful book, a beau
tiful Bible. But it is above all a
practical, functional book. As
with most books, the printed
word is of primary importance;
the embellishments are secon
dary.
The Catholic Family Bible em
bodies text from the Confrater
nity of Christian Doctrine (parts
of the Old Testament and all of
the New Testament) translations.
In appearance and in readabili
ty, the text of this edition of the

Bible leaves little to be desired.
The text is not cramped and
crowded; the type is quite leg
ible. Chapter and verse are
clearly marked; chapters are
paragraphed according to mod
ern usage and form. Each page
has a running head summary
line; each chapter has its caption
and often chapters have internal
captions. Footnotes and explana
tory materials follow each book
and do not distract the pages
of text. A special word of com
mendation should be said for
the summaries and the notes;
they are brief, meaty in con
tent, and a delight to peruse.
They serve their purpose ad
mirably.
The label “beautiful” derives
from the lavish use of illustra
tive material throughout the
Bible. To describe it would take
an entire brochure — but then
only inadequately. Initial letters
of each book and chapter are il
luminated; full color illustrations
come from religious books of
the 8th to the 16th centuries—
none more recent. Many of the
initial letters of the. books come
from a Bible presently in the
Library of Congress where it
is esteemed to be that library’s
“finest illuminated manuscript.”
The end papers are reproductions
of four great medieval stained
glass windows from cathedrals
in Chartres, Poitiers, Bourges
and Amiens.
In this edition, every reason
able effort has been made to
reproduce the Word of God in a
setting as beautiful as human
minds, hearts and hands can de
vise and still place the volume
in the financial reach of all. The
publishers are to be compliment
ed on their high aims and on
the success of their efforts in
producing this edition. It is de
finitely an enrichment of the
Catholic family, of Catholic lit
erature and of Catholicism in
the English-speaking world. It is
an ideal Bible for the Catholic
family.
