fever and was abed for several
months.
When the Marists first came
to Brunswick, they rented a home
on Union Street as a residence,
but during the Spanish-American
War when money was scarce, the
priest moved to the Shannon
house and lived there until the
present rectory was built in 1899.
This rectory was originally de
signed to house only two priests
and cost $2,100. The rectory was
completed and paid for in full
before the Fathers occupied it.
__The parochial school in Bruns
wick was begun in 1900 after
Father Luckie had requested Sis
ters of Bishop Keiley. The first
faculty included Sisters Aloysius,
Ignatius, Celestine, and Gene
vieve of the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Father Luckie secured for them
a house, formerly a grocery store,
on the corner of Richmond and
Howe streets. This served as a
combination school and house,
with the seventh and eighth
grade girls being taught in the
sacristy of St. Francis Xavier
Church on the opposite corner.
The need for a larger school grew
rapidly as Brunswick had a rela
tively floating population. The
shipyards drew families in the
winter and there were also fish-,
ermen and their families and
some tourists.
Father Luckie set to work to
secure property for a convent-
school and acquired additional
property on Richmond Street for
this purpose. In the spring of
1902, Father Luckie, through the
generous aid of the parishioners
had built a new convent-school,
a frame building according to the
prevailing type found in the
South, the old Colonial type. The
kind benefactions of Father Gunn,
pastor at the time in Atlanta and
later Bishop of Natchez, aided
much in furnishing the new
house.
This little school has grown to
a point where now, in 1956, it is
bursting at the seams. Under the
direction of Father Cummings,
the present pastor, plans are be
ing made for a modern school,
which will face on Union Street,
Shortly after the Marist Fathers
arrived in Brunswick, in addition
to their own mission field, the
Bishop requested them to take
over the missions of the Albany
parish. . . Willacoochee,. Alapaha,
Douglas and McGovern Settle
ment. When in 1901-1902 Bishop
Keiley was able to assign a priest
to Albany, the Marist withdrew.
Father J. P. Cas.sagne, who had
earlier been an assistant, returned
to Brunswick as pastor in 1908
and served until 1913. He is. re
membered for his deep devotion
to the outlying missions, and it
was during his tenure of office
that the Chapel of the Immacu
late was erected at Ludowici.
Father Joseph Petit, who was
pastor from 1920-1924, was re
sponsible for the erection of the
new church and the plant build
ing in Waycross. Also, during
his administration, the local
Knights of Columbus acquired
Xavier Hall, which now serves
as a meeting place for parish or
ganizations. Father Petit redec
orated and renovated the church
at Brunswick, enlarged the sanc
tuary, and erected three new
altars.
While Father Peter McOscar
was pastor (1924-1931) the chapel
on St. Simons Island was erected
and dedicated to St. William.
Father F. Marion Perry became
pastor of the parish is 1935. He
| organized the first Catholic Boy
Scout Troop in Brunswick. Fath-
j er Hasson succeeded Father Perry
as pastor in 1941. During his
term of office, with the unceas
ing help of the late Father Leo F.
Ziebarth, the Church of the Na
tivity of Our Lady was built at
Darien. It commemorates the
Martyrs of Toiomata (1597). Also,
during Father Hasson’s admini
stration, a third assistant was add
ed to the Brunswick parish. Fa
ther John T. Mercer was pastor
from 1947-1953, during which
time St. Joseph’s Church at Jes-
up was built, replacing the Chapel
of the Immaculate Conception in
Ludowici and also a school opened
in Waycross. Father John J.
Martell became pastor on August
24, 1953, just prior to the ground
breaking for the new convent,
which was dedicated by Bishop
Hyland on March 28, 1954.
The present pastor,' Father
James M. Cummings, took office,
in August of 1955. Under his
leadership additional property
has been acquired in view of the
building of a modern school which
the Catholics of Brunswick hope
will be a reality in the not too
distant future.
At the present time the parish
of St. Francis Xavier and the S.
.E. Georgia Missions includes the
parish church in Brunswick, St.
William’s on St. Simons Island,
St. Joseph’s in Jesup, Our Lady
of the Nativity in Darien, St.
Joseph’s in Waycross, and Our
Lady Star of the Sea in St.
Mary’s. The assistants to Father
Cummings are Father William
Collins, Joseph Kane, and Albert
Hebert.
In point of time the oldest of
all the parish societies is the Altar
and Rosary Society, established
in 1897 with Father Luckie as its
first spirituaLDirector.
Brunswick men banded to
gether and formed a Council of
the Knights of Columbus in 1919.
The name of the Council chosen
by the' local men was Henry
Thomas Ross Council, in memory
of the first Catholic man from
Brunswick to die in World War
I. The Supreme Council gave the
number 1939 to the Brunswick
Council and today it is known
as HENRY THOMAS ROSS
COUNCIL 1939.
The Home and School Associ
ation (formerly the P. T. A.)
was organized in the fall of 1938
under the guidance of Father
Thomas J. Roshetko. Also in 1938
the Portuguese men and women
organized a- Confraternity Of Our
| Lady of Fatima for the men and
a Sodality for the women. In
1956. Father Cummings organized
the Holy Name Society. At the
present time Father Hebert is in
the process of organizing the
Confratenity of Christian Doc
trine.
